amd and ati

I dont know if everyone heard the recent news, but amd and ati are merging in the near future. let me know if you think it is good or bad.

They haven't already merged according to the press release. Not until Q4 2006, pending shareholder approval, Court approval and everything else.

I couldn't get much info out of that release though. It didn't really say what kind of products they hope to develop as a result of the merger. To say the PR was ambiguous at best is an understatement.

Sure why not, whatever pushes intel out of the market.

Hang on. Let me get this straight.

AMD has what? One manufacturing plant? Two? They can not even supply the likes of Dell (as badly as they want to). They own what? 14% of the market? And they operated in the red for how many years because they practically had to give their processors away to get anyone to buy them? And let me see... They own HOW much of the corporate sector was it?

Intel completely kicks their ass in absolutely every aspect. They completely dominate the market. They own 82.2% of the market share last I checked. They have Dell, the biggest manufacturer of PCs out there. They completely dominate the corporate sector (which is why AMD has been suffering financially. You can't really get rich selling Sempron processors to a bunch of kids)

So how exactly is it that AMD is going to topple Intel by merging with ATi? All that means, more than likely, are advanced chipsets.. But chipsets aren't everything.

Look at it this way, AMD started against a company that at the time had 99% of the market in processors and chipsets, and went from having 1 or 2% of the market to almost 20%- thats not getting your ass kicked!

I think it's a rather good move. Considering I own both an AMD processor as well as an ATi card I cant see the harm in it what so ever. I dont think it'll push Intel out of the market but it'll definitely give AMD a better run in the industry.

I agree with what Breaks said. Intel will always be the dominant processor manufacturer but AMD, by making deals like this can at least cut into the market and produce better products. At the moment Conroe is the badass processor, but AMD are still making great midrange chips.

It's not their midrange chips that they are selling. It is their Semprons in cheap computers like HP. The only problem is that you don't make money selling budget processors. This is what has given them some points in market share, but what matters is PROFITS. lol. Shareholders like to see profits.

I knew Intel was going to turn around and kick them in the ass as soon as AMD showed their hand. It was obvious what was going to happen.

All I can see this merger doing is helping AMD make some chipsets. I can't see any benefit to ATi and their VGA business at the moment, but maybe someone can enlighten me. I can't for the life of me understand why ATi would want to merge, but I guess I really don't know their financial situation at the moment or anything.

AMD also has their Athlon 64 and X2 line of processors in various computers sold at stores.

Not to mention the majority of online computer cofigurators (Alienware, cyberpower, ect) have mostly AMD chips.

Yes they do, but that does not comprise the bulk of their sales, like I said. It is their Sempron chips that they are moving in volume. To be honest, when you get up into the high end where the price is the same between Intel and AMD, the majority of people will take Intel over AMD every time. AMD has already learned this the hard way. They don't have the reputation to demand top dollar for their chips.

i agree with just about everything sirkenin has said, but i think the merge will help them out a lot because it makes them have more money and when you have more money, you can do a lot more things, hopefully pushing out intel a bit. i would like to see 50-50 shares in the future.

everyone would like to see 50 50 it would keep prices extremely competitive, but Sir Kenin, how long has AMD had the crown of processors with the 64 bit architecture, yes Conroe is out now but AMD has had their run and most likely will make a comeback, as Intel just did.

AMD might not be as large as Intel within the processor department indeed but at the end of the day AMD can't be doing that bad if it's still bringing out fairly decent processors at the price they're at, and they must be making a fair amount of profit (maybe not to the scale of Intel) in order to buy (or merge with) ATi.

I'll say one thing though, the amount of ATi fan boys out there and for the fact that ATi do bring out some extremely decent graphics cards, it'll do wonders for AMD's reputation getting it on with ATi (and as someone else said, not to mention the new amount of profits that ATi will bring to AMD).

A lot of the speculation on why these two companies merged, is that fact they most likely will start pushing integrated cpu/gpu chips. This would eliminate the need for a seperate video card, give it access to more ram, but also in my opinion restrict upgradability. I think it was a pretty good move, Intel is so powerful, ATI needed some help since they are bankrupt, it is either a brilliant move by AMD or a company ending one. We shall see.
