They forgot one! The Epson HX-20 with a microcassette drive and addon ram cartrige priced at $379.95 in 1982. It had a 4" diagonal lcd screen and it's own carrying case. When pulling out the removable small ram cartridge you could plug in a small printer for printouts like convenience store receipts. They even had a phone set and large ram cartridge available. I ought to know since I serviced and went through over 70 of them.

Macs certainly are covered in that category.
 
Gee? All this time I thought I was a Linux newbie. :P But then there's Big Macs and Windows to follow UNIX! and those old 8086 and 8088 clunkers. That article seems to fail in mentioning the creation of the first Apple desktop while making posters of the MACs to come later.
 
That's a neat find. I guessed about 5 of the machines that were posted there ;)

Man, has anyone ever used an Amiga? I've only tried an emulator so far, but they are impressive systems!
 
One friend those many years ago had a commodore 64 when Radio Shack started selling them. The Amiga was probably seen in an ad. The funny thing is that I could have easily bought a new Epson HX-20 when they first came out in '82 for less then half the price seen on the new models now seeing lower prices. Those were the sideband cb radio days there however.
 
There are a few others this article does lack for sure. One company that refused to sell complete systems to private users strictly supplying businesses was DEC(Digital Equipment Corp.) finally bought out by Ashton. Where was Packard Bell through all of this? AST, Epson desktop models? even the top name SUN seems missing there. But an Apple laptop was seen.
 
Compaqs were down there with AST but probably not as bad. I sure saw relief when that got bumped for a custom with a Soyo board in it. From 66mhz to 500mhz is an adventure! :D

used one? i still have one, fantastic bit of kit it is too. Even got the extra HDD for it. Amazing how many hours kids used to kill just using the text to chat function that sounded like stephen hawkins!
 
The article there was probably the author's own favorites only and not the actual amount of popular systems through the years. Now if the article was a little more thorough you would be asked to look at the top 50 or more that made the favorites list during a 25 year period and a ballat would ask for the all time best favored.
