Is this good?

Hey guys. I just ordered a Athlon 64 X2 4200+ S939. Is this a good processor? Is it a lot better than a P4 3.0GHz?

BTW: Dont say Conroe is better, because I know it is. I already had the mobo for the X2 so I couldnt afford to get a new mobo and Conroe.

Cool. I know the GHz dont mean anything, I was just saying it was 3.0Ghz because I think bebopin64 thought I meant it was a P3. but I will definitely notice a difference between the two processors?

I have a single core 3700+ sandy and its way better then my p4 3.0 GHz HT. And the 4200+ has the same stock speed as the 3700+ and is dual core. Its a much better processor, dual core being a large chunck of the reason for that. Its really hard to compare single and dual core cpu's anyway.

Sweet. As well as cooling, I'm hoping to God. I have had enough with my Prescott. I honestly idle at 65 degrees Celcius, and load is 82 degrees C. It's absolutely rediculous. So hopefully the X2 gives me better temps.

well lets be clear and the improvement you will see. You will not see an improvement in
- Ability to check email
- Web surfing
- using ms office
- playing music

or doing any/all those things at the same time

you will see improvement in heavy multi tasking such as data processing, vidoe processing/encoding... oh and you should improvement in gaming (graphics card permitting)

yea i agree with APJ101. normally more memory will allow you to do more stuff, and for internet, ms office, and playing music a 10krpm hard drive would do just fine. of course, thats not to say a 7200rpm hard drive wouldnt either, at a much lower price. i mean i do a lot of gaming and i still don't get that impatient with my 7200rpm hard drive... and im putting two of them in RAID 0 anyways just so i never do get impatient. i mean windows will startup quicker.. games will load faster... it just depends on how patient you are... and in some cases how much memory you have. of course you can always add memory.

a faster processor... or a dual core one... only helps in certain applications. personally i think that if you spend $100 on a 3200+ or $650 on an FX-57 you'll barely notice a difference when surfing the web... especially because that doesnt only depend on your computer... it depends on your internet, the servers internet connection... and the quality of the server you're connecting to, granted other people will be trying to connect to it as well.

Yeah, I am hoping to get back into video editing and gaming once I get this processor. With my current one, i was always afraid to do anything because of the heat issue. If I even began to edit videos the temps would just be unbearable. So I look forward to using the X2 to its full capabilities.

What are the temps running at?

I am idling at 65 C, and under load it is at 82 C. And when I say load, that is just like playing games on the internet, burning CD's, etc...It's bad, so that's why I'm getting rid of it. And I have tried everything BTW, like the Big Typhoon, and several other HSF's, different fan arrangements, cable management...Nothing helps the temps. So I'm looking forward to a cooler running CPU for sure.

Did you use AS5? I had the exact same problem with my processor, now with the Zalman 9500 I have been running at much lower temps. With a zalman 7700alcu my processor was at 65C/85C, with the 9500 and AS5 it is now 50C/65-70C.

Yeah, I have more than tried AS5. It's all I use btw. I have applied and re-applied that stuff so many times, I cant count it on two hands... I did, however, just disassemble my computer to make room for the new mobo/cpu, and the heatsink was COVERED in dust. So I blew all that out, and wondered how it could breathe at all. So that prob. would have helped the temps a lot. Oh well, I still needed the new CPU anyway.
