hi i got like £80 and i need a hard drive at about 250gb what would be the best hard drive to get perfomance wise and noise wise
thanks

If I recall correctly, and don't hate me if I'm wrong, the Samsung Spinpoint is the quietest one of the bunch. It is also a very good performer. You might want to look in that direction.

If you look hard enough you can probably get a WD Caviar 320GB SE, which is what I have, great drive, extremely quiet, had it 6 months and had no problems at all.

I bought it for £89 6 months ago so I suppose it should be within your budget now:)

For one, my experience with WD drives since 1999, encompassing several hundred of them, is that they are absolute garbage.

For another, no drive benefits to any degree with a cache over 512kb. You will notice no difference between 8MB and 16MB caches. That is a marketting gimmick. Please see the following article for more details.

Ive had good luck with W/D, had the worst luck with Maxtor, out of the last 10 I tried had to send back 3. Out of the hundreds of W/Ds I ordered I think mabe over the years I have sent back 5 or 6

In the time I have been dealing with WD, I have RMAed over 30% of them. The only drive that has given me worse luck is Fujitsu. They are also complete crap in mission critical applications such as file servers. They just can't handle the load.

I gave up being a WD Authorized Reseller for that reason. I didn't need the headache. I simply refused to sell them unless the client wanted a Raptor or Caviar RE.
