hi all, i have a compaq desktop hear, and when it boots, its giving me this erorr, SMART, Back up and replace, press F2 to boot, i press F2, and it boots. The pc does seam to run ok, but i have a felling that the hard drive may be on its way out. I have checked the bios for a setting to disable the SMART warning and i cant find it. Is there a way i can erase the smart erorr or fix my hard drive? i really don't have any money for a new HD at this time. Thx:)

Yes...if your computer still works, you're lucky SMART actually caught it. Just make a backup of everything and be sure you don't save anything else on the drive. Who knows, it might continue to work for another few months...or it might die tonight.

backup your data
i had the same error on a lap but i didn't get the chance to save my data
the HDD is going to die

One suggestion, if it does die and you were unable to backup all your data, stick the hard drive in the freezer for a while. It's been proven to work. Makes the hard drive work again for a few hours.... just enough time to get all ur data off of it.

Make sure it goes into a plastic baggy tho.

EDIT:

I'll give it a whirl, I've heard why it works before but let me try and explain.
Usually the problem this fixes is the hard drive has stopped spinning or slowed down too much, the bearings are locked up. By putting it through temperature extremes the internal components and lubrication expand and contract loosening them up and redistributing the lubrication.
In any event, it's not a permanent fix! You're hard drive still has problems and needs to be replaced, it just gives you some time to recover your data first. make no mistake, your hard drive is FAILING if you have to do this and needs to be replaced!

It's a trick that's hit and miss. Sometimes it works for a few minutes. Most times it doesn't work at all, but you have nothing to lose by trying it.

smart failure = your hardrive's life is almost over and a failure WILL happen very soon. Its a warning for you to ghost your HD to a new disk because it will fail.

Dont kid your self your HD is going to fail soon

Freezeing The Hard Drive

ITS PROVEN!!! I took this old 200GB hard drive that died and the computer said that it had some bad sectors. I was unable to format and or install windows on it any more. So i put it in the frezzer for about 6 hours, i took it out and i let it get warm for about 30 min. I put it back in the pc and i was able to format it and reinstall windows. the hard dirve has been running for about 2 weeks now and i havent had 1 problem with it! Thanks so much all! You helped me out!
