2GB edrive usb not recongnised

Hey there can someone help me out i have a 2gig edrive flashdrive and when i plug it into a usb port on my pc (usb2.0 and 1.1, i have tried all 8 of them) this message comes up.
One of the usb devices attached to this computer has mafunctioned,and window does not reconise it,click to fix.
i click and it says its and uknown device.
But if i sit there and plug it in and out and in and out somtimes it works.
what could this mean is the flashdrive dead?

It does sounds like it's the flash drive not operating too well. Check if there are a lot of dust and such in the usb head of the flash drive also. Do you have any other PC/Laptop that you can try it on?
 
thanks for the reply,there doesn't seem to be any dust in there (well none that i could see) and i have tried it on 2 other pcs and both with xp and it still doesn't work.
i also tried it on a IBM R30 laptop that has windows 2000 and it worked every time i pluged it in.
if 2000 can work it why can't xp?
 
Yeah, try formatting it, but it sounds like the flash memory got damaged somehow, won't hurt to try the format, though... That's why you don't use jump drives for archiving! :)
 
It happend to work when i pluged it in i went in and formated it and unpluged it then reconnected it and then the message came up:One of the usb devices attached to this computer has mafunctioned,and window does not recognise it .

As opposed to water from a slightly lower one? ;)

Yeah, the flash memory sounds like it's bad. Same thing happened to one of my parents MemorySticks... Had to just pitch the thing...
