I have an external hard drive. Every so often a window pops up in the system tray. heres a pic.

What is this?

Well, I know what the MFT is.. That's the Master File Table (or was that Marriage and Family Therapist?? I always get the two confused. :o ) That's something the WD HDDs are famous for. It sounds like the MFT is pooched...corrupted...toast. Usually this indicates a failure of the drive. I would backup your data immediately if it were me.

You would say something lame like that for sure about WD. Missing partition information if that is the case does not indicate hardware failures. You may have to reformat a drive if this information can't be restored. Periodic backups prevent massive loss of data if and when a drive does actaully fail.

Yup, because you have absolutely no idea how many WDs I've seen do that. I'm beginning to think it's their trademark. That and *click click click*. Their signature finishing moves.

He might get away with reformatting it and that might fix the problem, but then again he might not. Hard to say. Usually it's a hardware failure.

In any event I would backup the data immediately.

All I have is a gig of music which can easily be restored. I have the music on CDs. but about the problem. Should I re-format?
