when i save a video on my webcam, i cant view it

Changing the extension like that doesnt change the file at all. If its video.mov and you rename it video.mpg, it will be video.mpg.mov. Sorry, you would need to convert the video, not change the name.

but if the video is supposed to be .avi but somehow in the transfer the filetype has changed (it has happened) then changing the extension to .avi will fix it.

thats happen because you still hide the extension. uncheck "Hide extension for known file types"

you will see the extension at the file name the file and you can change it

if the file already have an extension please delete the extension first

Dont change anything though before you know what type of file your dealing with. Just untick "Hide Extensions For Known File Types" and tell us the extension. It could very well be something like RM/RAM requiring you to have a suitable player installed, such as the Real Player.
