Raid 0

Because not all builders are informed. They don't really know enough about RAID 0. It happens unfortunately. Go back and tell him you do not want a RAID 0 array and then go from there. Add whatever HDDs are necessary.

How much less reliable is this setup? Should I go out and buy a $230 harddrive now because I don't want to sacrifice a bunch of speed?

If I get another harddrive... it has to be a Raptor 10000 rpm 16mb cache drive (Another other specs I should worry about?).

RAID 0 arrays are not faster than a single disk, number one. Second, they cut the failure rate in half, and when the array fails you lose everything. A Raptor would smoke an ordinary array. I have one and it's great. Grab a couple of those and you have one kickass storage setup.

Cutting it in half would mean it decreased failure rate. Is that what you meant?

So what should I do with the drives I have? I guess I could keep one, sell the other and put it towards a Raptor?

Hmm. Somehow my post got lost. Let's try this again. I didn't mean that. I see how I completely screwed up the wording there. It halves the meantime between failures.

I would use the Raptor as your main drive and one big secondary harddrive for all your data.

its more risky if one fails the you loose everything.Because one file is writte in 2 hardrives so lets say one half goes here and the other to the second hd.WEll i have a raptor 150gb and i could of gotten raid for those 250 bucks but what for.Raid is only good when you do big files and you wouldint see big improvment in normal stuff.Sometimes in some files Raid is every slower. It depends what you use the computer for.

ex Raid 0 will help you load a battlefield map faster then the raptor.

As with any single drive, see if it works well for a few weeks. Only then start placing important stuff on it.

I should advise you that I would never use a RAID 0 for storage, because it doesn't make sence. I would only use it for performance needy stuff.

RAID 0 made more sence a few years back, when single drives were too slow. Today, a single drive is generally plenty fast.

Thats not true, having RAID 0 does increase average transfer speeds, however it's not a significant improvement for most people.

And RAID 0 is less reliable because if one drive fails, you lose your data. So you have twice the chance of a hard drive failing and loosing your data.

It IS true. The increase is all in your head. Here is the review with benchmarks:

Not a significant performance? Try none at all.. Or would you like me to point out each benchmark to you individually?

well
its technically less reliable, because you're using two drives... say ones going to die in a year... and the other is going to die in 6 years.... all the data is lost in one year instead of half of it in one year and the other half in 6 years... make sense?
it does help performance a bunch though... especially for games like oblivion and the like...

Would you care to provide benchmarks, because Anand did and his benchmarks don't seem to coincide with what you're saying. Like I have said, it's all in your head... But if it makes you feel better go nuts. :)
