Somebody gave me a gateway with windows xp factory installed. I wanted to just take my old hd which is a 80 gig ata 133, windows xp upgrade, and put it in so I wouldn't have to mess around with all my files, firefox favs, emails saved and all that. But it wouldn't boot. I put the old hard drive in as a slave and of course I can access my files once I find them, but not my bookmarks or saved emails. Why? What could I do?

If you are using firefox and thunderbird then you are going to have to go into mozilla's site and look for help i just recently did this they are hidden inside setttings and things so its a pain in the butt..

For links and favorites you go into the DocumentsandSettings folder and open the directory with your user name. From there look for the "Favorites" folder where you simply copy those into the same folder on the primary drive. FireFox can import these afterwards.

This will work accept for one problem if he has added any favories in Firefox and not IE they will not be there make sure you have all of them before doign this method or you will loose them

This method doesn't remove files from the slaved drive. You are simply copying the favorites from one to the other. Upon booting from the old drive you can easily open FireFox favorites and save each link into a text file after a brief visit to each site. Notepad usually works well for that. Once they are opened in IE and even saved to favorites there you have FireFox iimport them. Now they are saved in the favorites folder under your user name.
