hey everyone. i'm really stumped on this. it doesn't happen everytime but when i start my computer sometimes when i've logged in and everything my mouse freezes. but i can still click and move and everything. the cursor just doesn't move. its like i have an invisible mouse. any idea's how i can sort this out? or anyone heard of this befor?

it could be anything. try booting up in safe mode. replace the batteries if it is a wireless mouse. if none of that works come back.

Most likely the mouse.sys file has been damaged. If you have the installation disk available try typing "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt and press enter to start the system file checker. That will repair and replace any damaged or missing system files. If the pointer was simply freezing up you would more likely be looking at either video drivers or hardware faults.

you might want to reinstal you grafic's card driver. i had the problem once too, reinstalled dx9.0c and my Nvidia drivers and it was over.

If you have drivers for the mouse itself, I'd uninstall them. Graphics drivers, as Archangel said, are worth a shot, but I assume only the cursor sticks, everything else works? That's not usally a graphics problem. Now if everything sticks, but you can tell the machine's not locked up, THAT'S usally a graphics problem.

If that's a programmable model with it's own software you could be seeing the thing that The_Other_One is pointing at. A bad install or something that doesn't get copied and installed correctly can be a headache at times. Before attempting a reinstall after removal however you may want to disable your current list of startup programs with the msconfig utility. Sometimes antivirus and other softwares can cause a driver clash.

This happens sometimes to me when i used a PS/2 mouse, PS/2 have poor contacts on the board.

If the mouse has a pull off PS2 adapter you can try plugging it in to a usb port to see if that solves the problem there. If it start moving normally the board's socket could have a bad adapter that is no longer any good. If the PS2 plug was bumped hard enough it could be either a broken contact or cold solder point on the board.

For basic repair and general uses before Windows is fully loaded you fall back on the PS2 since usb controllers may not loaded. Having run both ways here the PS2 is preferred especially if you plan on running other types of OSs like Linux. The option to use the "tab" key to move around when the mouse is run on a usb port takes a little getting used to. Usb generally offers smoother movement of the pointer however.

I had this problem. Took a reinstall of the os to fix. Everybody said it was a virus, but there were no virii on my system. =P

Hope you find out the issue, do report back!

Often you simply need to overwrite or delete and replace one single device driver in order to see a hardware or input device working again. Too often the usual "cry of virus/spyware" is heard without knowing that one file needed for something was damaged or deleted accidently.

If the usb option is available you could try running the mouse that way to see whether it is or isn't a problem with the PS2 connector or other board fault. If it still failed the next thing would be a Windows driver problem. The "sfc /scannow" used at the Run prompt to start up the system file checker can often correct things with system files that otherwise cause some odd problems at times. A new installation of software can also see problems when something cross links to something else.
