Hello, I just bought a GeForce MX 4000 and i had a little problem when i took out my old video card. basically it wouldn't fit so after a few minutes i figure out that it goes into the slots that you put sound cards, 56k modems ect ect.

I installed the card, and installed the drivers and Dirextx9. Now when i out my monitor in the video card port the screen is black but when i put it in the default monitor port my monitor works but the video card doesn't work.... can i get some help here?

If its a old board you might have to hook up the onboard video, go into the bios and disable the onboard video, shut down, hook back to the video card and see if it will boot! Or you might have a dud video card, from the way you talk it sounds like a PCI video card!

Sounds like you bought a PCI graphics card, you need an AGP or PCI-Express depending on your motherboard.

No he doesn't, he has a PCI slot, thus "modems, soundcards etc".

@Tknier188: You'll have to go into the bios and some changing, like the other one said.

You mean this?

Do you have a slot like this...

or this

In your computer? Found the sound of it, as others mentioned, you got a PCI card but had an AGP card, maybe PCI Express...

I'm slightly confused because you say you removed the old video card, correct? And yet you still have another onboard, "default" VGA port? What were you using before?

Well i have both and my old card went in the second one, it was old and ghetto as hell so i got rid of it and got a new one that went into the PCI slot.

I figured it out. thanks but when i try to play Quake 4 (which i got because of the new graphics card) its really choppy in video and sound.... even when i take off everything fancy for the graphics.

I have a GeForce Mx 4000

now it says it supports the Geforce...

3/TI
4/TI FX series
6 series
7 series

did i get the wrong F-ing card?

You're not going to get a card that will play Quake 4 at high settings if you're limited to PCI cards. If you don't have an AGP or PCI-E slot, you may be better off to look for a motherboard upgrade.

lol
what kind of graphics do you want to run Quake 4 at?
to run it at ultra quality i suggest either 1.5gb of ram and 256mb video card memory, or 1gb with 512mb video memory.
thing is, the video card can't just be a 7300 with 512mb... thats not good enough. my 7800gt plays the game on ultra quality, but ive got 2gb of memory. with 1gb i could only get high quality, which is actually about the same lol... but with 2gb i got ultra quality so w/e
for the AGP slot i'd suggest an x800xt or x850xt (or platinum edition if you can find one of those too, its just o/ced a little)
or, if you can drop a bit of money on it the 7800gs would do fine too. thats the best AGP card they sell for around $200.
for the pci-express slot you can get better performance for your money just because theyre a bit cheaper for the performance... id suggest a 7800gt or 7900gs or something along those lines...
funny because im selling the orange stuff in my sig, that'll max quake 4 pretty easily since quake 4 uses a lot of memory, utilizes dual core, and high graphics.

you're probly not interested because it is a little more expensive than most people like, but its definitely a very good deal for the equipment thats in this thing. it'll do Quake 4 at ultra settings and also around 4xAA... 1280x1024. (or 1280x960 if thats what your monitor supports)
served me well, i just want a core 2 duo thats all.

I have a agp slot

This is my system specs

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
2.13 GHz
736 DDR RAM

Im a quake cultist ive been with quake since it first came out and i still play Q2.

But basically you saying i should get a AGP slot video card that is x800xt or x850xt

yea, the x800 or x850 (xt or xtpe) would do fine. if you like, the best card for the AGP slot is the 7800gs... lemme edit some links in for you.
a little more expensive than i though... last time i checked it was $205 but they're out of stock for that card

newegg doesn't have any x800 or x850 xt or xtpe cards for the agp slot in stock sorry. let me see what else i can find.

worst case, get this.

a bit better

best for AGP

but again, if you'd like to check out my rig in that thread, ill sell you motherboard cpu memory and video card all in one so that you can play it on ultra setting with even AA enabled..
even with the 7800gs for AGP you won't get ultra settings unless you've got more than 1gb of system memory because Quake 4 simply uses a LOT of memory. i mean i used to try and play it with 1gb of memory and on ultra settings it would give me hard drive lag, not enough memory. then i upgrade to 2gb and it ran fine on ultra settings. plus, it uses like 75-100% of my cpu, so an Athlon XP might lag during the game anyways... bottlenecking a new video card if you get one.

I didn't see anywhere were he wanted to play at high settings....

If you have a PCI-E Slot, which i kind of doubt...get a 7300LE for 30$ or a GS for 45$, If you have an APG, you could try getting a Geforce 5500 which would play it much better then the MX 4000, but you might weant to invest on a betetr card anyways. in the Geforce 6 range. depends on how you want to play and how much you want to spend.
