Rdram?

Has anyone ever heard of RDRAM? Apparently thats what my computer has, but I can't find it anywhere.

Yes, theres such thing as RDRAM, however not many machines used it, and since its fairly old, it's extremely hard to find it in stores or on online stores. Your best bet would be to go on eBay.

It's really old ram that has to be used in pairs. I don't know of many places that sell it, though.

Thanks guys, but after looking at those prices I think I'd rather just buy a new motherboard and get normal ram lol. Although I'm not sure if I'll be able to swap over my cpu, I have a 1.5 gig pentium 4, so I'm not sure what socket it would need.

Go to google and type in cpuz and then click on a link and download it and it should tell you what socket your cpu is. Is this a prebuilt computer or a custom computer?

I'm not sure if it was prebuilt or custom, as I bought off of my moms boss, it looks to have been prebuilt, but I can't say 100 percent. I will try that program and let you know what socket it is.

Ok so I downloaded cpuz and it says it is a socket 423 mPGA:S, although I've never heard of one of those

Your processor is almost definitely Socket 478 or 423. Unless you want to majorly bottleneck your system, you won't want to use it in a new 'puter. Give us a budget, and we'll put together a new one for you.

edit: i see you found that out already

Well at the moment I'm in the market for a laptop because I'm going to school in January(hopefully), so if I do rebuild my old PC it will have to be over time, but I would say at most I'd be looking at 600 overall, and thats being generous. I already have a brand new maxtor 100 gig harddrive, and soundcard, so all I should need is new motherboard, processor, and memory and video card.

Well for $500, I would build something along these lines:
Athlon 64 x2 3800
7600GS
500W PSU

if you give me a couple minutes, i'll find some stuff

Thanks Bobo, I appreciate it, at the moment with my job and everything I could probably have a new laptop within 2 paycheques, its just having the will power not to spend my money thats getting me. I could pretty much have all that stuff you listed in about 1 paycheque too.

Sorry I couldnt' build you a whole system, I'll get right on that. I'll shoot for $500 so you can have a little leway.

Motherboard:
ASUS M2N Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
or
GIGABYTE GA-M55plus-S3G Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
both $83.
I own that same Gigabyte board, and I must say that I love it. Great drivers, especially for sound, and integrated video on both of them, if you don't have enough money for a dedicated video card right off the bat.

CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Orleans 2.4GHz Socket AM2 Processor Model ADA3800CNBOX - Retail $109
or
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2.0GHz Socket AM2 Dual Core Processor Model ADA3800CUBOX - Retail $151
It will depend on your monetary situation which one you get, but I highly recommend the X2, because it is dual-core.

RAM:
Crucial Technology Ballistix 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT6464AA663 - Retail $110
or
OCZ Gold 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2G8001GK - Retail $130
Again, this depends on budget. The Crucial memory is on a big sale right now, so it is a very good price. However, it is only DDR2-667. If you have the money, you could upgrade to the OCZ, which is what I have. You won't see much of a difference, if any, but it will be better in the long run

Video Card:
eVGA 256-P2-N612-TX Geforce 7600 GTS 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail $125
As long as you aren't doing heavy-duty gaming, this card will be good for everything you throw at it. It also has an MIR.

All that comes to between $427 and $491, depending on what you get. That leaves a good budget for a PSU and case.

PSU:
Rosewill RP500-2 ATX 2.01 500W Power Supply - Retail $55
or
HIPER 4K530 ATX 530W Power Supply - Retail $83
The first PSU is a pretty good deal for its price, but I highly recommend the second choice. I have the 580W model in my computer, and it was the best thing that I ever invested in. Modular cabling is also a plus. But I do realize that it is a little expensive.

Case:
I really can't pick anything out for you, because this is mainly about looks. Tell me what you want, and I'll give you some good suggestions.

So without a case, I get to between $482 and $574.

edit: Shit! I just saw that you are in Canada....that really complicates things, cause Newegg generally has the best prices on everything.

Holy Bobo, I wasn't expecting something that in depth, thanks alot, it really gives me an idea of what I could get. No worries though about the canadian thing, I would probably buy from tigerdirect anyways, since they have a canadian site so I can look up all those things on it and see how things go.

But thanks again for doing that, helps out alot. I'll check the prices out on tigerdirect.ca and let you know how they compare.
