Norton Anti-virus and PC Sluggishness

Hello. I have heard a lot of talk that Norton Anti-virus slows your computer down drastically. Does norton really effect a pc's performance?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hi

In terms of anti-virus software, i have never enjoyed my experience of using norton, and really dont have any say on whether it affects the performance of the PC.

I would like to say that yes, it could slow ur PC down depending on what u have set it up to do, if u have it continually scanning for example.

In my opinion, i suggest chucking norton out, and suggest an anti-virus such as AVG. you get free versions of this, or you pay for versions which include firewall, or spyware scanner.

let me know if this help

I say yes, because it uses system resources out the butt and constantly scans your computer using "realtime" protection. Now, ALOT of big name AV softwares do this as well, it;s not uncommon...but Norton's just seems to be more "noticable" I guess you could say. I used it for years, it wasn't really THAT big a deal for me...until I wanted every ounce of performance out of my system.

I would love to get rid of norton but it's not my pc, it's the family pc. I was wondering cause I am in the process of saving up for my own custom pc and if norton would be the way to go again but I don't think I will. Also my mom has already paid for a two year suscription so we mine as well use it.

ooh hell yeah,

I had norton preloaded on my Hp computer when i got it and removed it 2 days later because it realy made m system lag,Especialy when it only had 256Mb of ram.

AVG is best imho.

I have norton on my laptop and i cant say i have noticed much of a difference the new one has the little protection center which i disabled and it runs just fine now although i have avg on my pc becuase its running vista and its a little faster but not much and that could be becuase the processor is faster and it has 2 gigs as upposed to my laptop that has 1

I use Symantec Anti-virus corporate edition with no problems.
but i gotta say that norton with all it's version slows down the PC, That's why i changed it anyway.

Yes, it's not just useless but also degrades your pc performace. I used Norton Antivirus before and really dissapointed with it.

I use norton 2006 and it does not slow down my pc at all, it uses 20mb of ram and no cpu power running real time protection. The only time I even see it is if I am installing some kind of software I might have to wait a minute for it to scan the files before it will let me install said software and I only have to wait if it is a large file like 4gb or something. I am willing to wait a minute just to make sure what I am installing does not have a virus. If I install something like a 10mb exe file it scans it so fast I dont even notice it just installs it. I have tried AVG and didnt notice any difference in speed. I even dissabled norton and did not notice any difference. I guess if you are running a pentiumII 450ghz with 64mb of ram it might slow ya down but with computers being so fast now days norton is not going to slow down your pc anymore than zonealarm or spybot running the tea timer.

Bit exagerated there, "450GHz".

As you have said "I am willing to wait a minute..." That right there is what we are talking about, you have to sacrifice speed for protection with Norton or any other AV program really...the topic is just Norton today lol.

god i hate norton anti-virus
it takes so long to get anything done and it just altogether blows

I love this: direct, to the point, and accurate. Heck, I paid for mine and when I rebuilt my PC and had the opportunity to reinstall it again for free, I chose Avast instead.

Just when installing software...even if I used AVG or Avast I would right click on file and scan it before I installed it and guess what? You would have to wait and now you waisted more time. Norton does it automatically and you saved yourself a right click, lol! It would be slightly annoying if you was installing trusted software that you bought from a store but most of the software I install is freeware and we all know that comes bundled with crapware all the time so I usually scan it with ewido and norton before I give it a thumbs up and install it. It's better to be safe than posting hijackthis logs all the time asking whats wrong

Well for people who scan everything they install I'm sure that's a handy feature. I don't scan things I install, ever...and have had 0 viruses on my laptop to date. Actually to mention it, I don't think I've ever had a virus that I can remember, on any computer I've owned. It helps to not use questionable software and to be on a secure network at all times. If you're on the go or on an un-familiar network/connection, don't start mass downloading freeware programs...or just don't connect.

But let's simply look at the basics here. Norton is resource heavy on your system, therefore it slows it down whether you can "tell" or not. Actually if you want to go even deeper, just about anything from Symantec is what we like to call "bloated". Does it do a good job? Well that's for the consumer to decide, different people need different things.

Simply Google "Norton System Hog" and you'll get thousands of results and people who have to agree. The bottom line is it sells pretty well do to clever marketing, but under the professional appearance it's a pretty bloated bundle of softwares and can be as effective (or more accurately, as un-effective) as many FREEWARE/SHAREWARE products.

I'm bored so let's all take a look;

Well I won't post them all here, this is just turning into a huge bash. ANY AntiVirus software is going to have holes/security flaws because it's a never-ending battle. But Norton just seems to always be on the ugly side of things. Just looking at the vast majority of people here who hate it, and doing a few Google searches...you can get the picture that's it's not all it's cracked up to be. I used it for several years no problems...it never RUINED my computer. But it was definetly a system hog, I had my fair share of update problems and having to remove it and re-install it several times, etc. You may get the same kind of protection/performance/problems out of it as you would with say "AVG"....BUT...something like "AVG" is FREE and I like free.
