computer memory

just wondering how much RAM one really needs. i have 256mb, is this enough or should i get more. just curious, any reply's appreciated.

1GB is recommended, but 512 is fine for regular tasks (word processing, internet, etc.)
I don't see where you're getting these numbers from. 128 MB would be fine for just browsing, e-mail and word processing on an XP machine. Even less on, for example, Windows 9x.

But to the original poster; the amount of RAM you need is entirely dependent on what you do with your computer. If you're a hardcore gamer then you'd want 512 MB or more, but for regular activities you don't need as much.

Wtf are you talking about? I had a machine running XP with 128MB, and it could no almost nothing, and was insanely slow. Don't even try to tell him that 128MB is fine. I also had an XP system with 256MB of RAM. That ran one or 2 programs fine at a time, but loading time were very slow. I am currently running 4 XP systems, 2 with 512MB, 1 with 1GB, and 1 with 2GB. 512MB is definitely the minimum to have a good, fully functional system.

If you are a hardcore gamer, even 1GB is bordering too little.

Don't listen to this guy, he clearly doesn't know what he's talking about.

Heh, tell that to my 500 MHz box with 128 RAM. Running XP and can browse the web just fine. Got a couple of 64 MB RAM boxes with 98 installed and they browse just fine too. Get any Linux distro with a lightweight window manager like Xfce and you'll do just about anything with a minimum of RAM.

You're aware that when XP was released, 128/256 RAM was the norm?

Already have, sorry. I still don't really know his needs though, so I might change my opinion if I get some more information.

If you're a hardcore Tetris player it isn't ;)

I'm glad you actually read the thread this time, unlike here.

Compared to what!, I mean a Yogo will get you down the road!

Compared to pretty much everything. Firefox is just about out of the question on anything less than 256 nowadays because of the FastBack "feature", but conservative browsers like Dillo (which I happen to actually be a fan of) run on anything.

BTW if you're referring to the economical car, it's a Yugo, probably one of the most reliable cars ever built. The 5-speed 1.3 was pretty nippy too for my liking.

Um no, The yugo's were very unreliable and often seen on the side of the road.

256MB: VERY Minimum I would go for any windows XP based computer
512MB: The least I would recomend for XP, minimum for Vista
1GB: Fine for XP, good enough for many games. Least I would recommended for Vista.
2GB: Run any game out there fine.

I completely agree, and Loque has no idea what he is talking about. You can run XP on 64 megs of RAM, but the loading times will skyrocket. If you want faster load times, get 512-1024MB.

256Mb isnt that good with Xp as its slow as hell,I added another 256Mb stick and it was great.

But Windows 98 & 2000 worked quite well on my old machine with only 128Mb of ram.

i have win2000 running on a laptop.. 500MHz celeron and 64 Mb ram... and that runs fine. but yea... 512 Mb is really the minimum you wnt to have for a decent desktop pc running xp :)

I have XP with 256ram. It runs well browsing the web, and having a few chats open, as well playing some tunes with winamp. After that it starts getting slower but still works. I plan to add another 256 soon as I can

what I notice really slows me down is my 2.6cely I need to get rid of that booger.
