I don't have a lot of money right now. I do in saving but that is for my car. Anways I have a Compaq 5412rsh and I thought about replacing cpu and mobo. Can I do this and use my hdd and case? Will I lose Windows and have to format? And I can't because I don't have Windows. Then I would have to buy Windows and I really don't want that. Help is appreciated.

Most likely the OS won't work if you change motherboards, unless there very similar. I've tried many times with different systems, and I always get a blue screen when XP loads.

But you also have the worry of XP saying that you need to reactivate your copy of the OS because you changed too much hardware stuff, which you couldn't do in your case.

Sure you could. Why wouldn't you? You just have a new hash number and if the automatic activation doesn't like it, you just call Microsoft and they'll give you a new ID. I've had to do that MANY times.

Well Microsoft never lets me do it...but then again I haven't been persistent either.

So I could try to do what SirKenin said? Should I really take the risk though? Otherwise well I don't know... Maybe well... I just could wait a year when I have the money.

I've done it a zillion times. I have to. I get bored, so I start screwing around with hardware. I reinstall. I go to activate and the wizard says "screw you", so I have to call Microsoft. I go through the automated wizard on the other end that makes me read off a bazillion numbers on the screen. At the end of it it says it can't do it (GRRRRRRR  ) and puts me through to an operator. The operator asks me if it's installed on any other machine (even if it was I wouldn't tell them :P) and then gives me my new installation ID. Click next and voila! I'm off to the races again. I just did it again about a week ago.

But would I be able to get the mobo out of my case? Seeing it is prebuilt and they might of welded it on there. :)

lol. Welded? :P I'm sure you could. Just make sure you buy the same size board when you buy a new one, else buy another case as well.

I'm not sure if this is the case with yours, but some pre-built manufactureres include something in the OS, so that if you take out their motherboard and put in a new one, it won't read as a Compaq, and won't boot. If thats the case, then you may need to reinstall.

I would try what SirKenin suggested first though.
