cpu 99% when doing simple things

ok my computer's usage has been jumping straight to the 90s whenever i open a window, mostly the internet. and whenever im in itunes and i make a change to song, like moving it to a different folder or just changing the name, the music will start skipping and the somputer usage will jump up to the 90s again. my computer has 512 ram and is 2.5 ghz so i dont know whats wrong.

Have you scanned for spyware and try closing any processes you dont need running?

*Try scanning for spyware first.
*Defrag your hard drive

You might also have alot of programmes & stuff starting with windows that you dont realy need.

Open task manager> processes and see what exactly is taking all the memory. If it is simple programs with full CPU usage, you could have some spyware or virus or even a memory problem.

no i have the mcafee security. its not running at a high cpu usage constantly. open for the few seconds when im opening a window or making settings changes. when i look in the processes, i just see the current window taking up the usage. for instance, whenever i open a new firefox window (while looking at the processes) itll show the firefox process jump to the 90s and then go back down, so theres no programs using it up constantly.

i was just wondering why it takes so much to just open a window or make a change in itunes settings or whatnot.

Ram

Thats just the fact you have 512Mbs of RAM. Used to that was fine but you're seeing the program load into the ram and when it speeds back up it's loaded. It would be less noticable with 1gb of Ram. But thats the cost of speed.;)

i dont think its RAM because i have two other computer that have 256 ram and both have around 1.5 ghz each and they dont have this problem

Nope thats not true at all.

Yes the more memory you have the better realy but i think that your system is probably just loaded with spyware and viruses.

Did you scan it?

Also Run Hijack this and post the log here for us to see.

yes ive scanned it. im almost sure theres not spyware or viruses bc this is a new computer. would it even be a virus if it only happens when i open a window?

Your log's clean. Check your DMA status. Go into Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager. Expand 'IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers' and double click on Primary IDE Channel. Go to Advanced Settings and ensure that 'Current Transfer Mode' is set to DMA and not PIO.

If it says PIO, try the following:
http://winhlp.com/WxDMA.htm

nope its set to DMA. and i know its not a virus. this is a new computer. its just that it take up so much memory when opening a window or something.

i'd just check in the task manager which process is using so much of the cpu... go into processes and u can click the "CPU" tab and it'll sort it accordingly.
then, find out what the process is for by googling it, but set it to a low priority before doing a virus scan or anything, so it doesn't slow down the virus scan or your music playing too much.

well like i said if i look in the task manager then everything is normal the only thing thats using the cpu is system idle process or something, and thats when it says the cpu usage is at 0%. ive already said it only happens in the few seconds when its trying to open a window or when its updating a song name or something. only in those mere seconds. but sometimes when i have other programs up then everything will just start getting slower and lagging for about 15 seconds until the cpu usage goes back down.

the only thing thats using the cpu is system idle process
That's completely normal. The System Idle Process is just a counter that counts how much CPU time is not being devoted to any other processes. In your case, it's 99%, which means 0% (or there abouts) CPU usage.

System Idle Process is not an actual process.

are you really that stupid. Read the threads. Im pretty sure he knows what system idle process is. And he was saying it lags when a CERTAIN process starts to be loaded then that process will go up to 90s and back down.

Read the threads entirly before you post again

Thank You so much JFHuff. they must not be reading my posts because the keep suggesting the same thing after i already said its not a virus. its just the processes of opening windows and stuff.

does anyone have any idea why its doing this? any way to make it not use up so much of the cpu just to do these simple processes??

He stated "the only thing thats using the cpu is system idle process". The System Idle Process does not use CPU, it's just a counter, as I stated. So, no, I don't think he does know what the System Idle Process is. ;)

Thanks for the insult though. If I ever need another one, you'll be the first person I ask.

Also, andy704, I have not for one minute suggested you have a virus. So perhaps it is YOU who is not reading the "posts properly."

just one question... Is the pc running slow? I mean... i can immagine that a CPU will be 100% utilized for a moment when you starts up IE,.. jsut to make it startup faster ( I cant check this atm, since the task manager is disabled on this pc.. but i'll have a look at home :) )
