win 98 + maybe more:How do I set the details view for folders

Every time I go to open something I get a tiny window but that is not my beaf, it is I ALWAYS have to click the other button to get "Details"

It seems when you go from a internet browser to a folder, or even Open Office to a folder, you only get the list coming up, and it always starts off with that tiny stupid window that you have to drag out to make bigger,
Also when you are in Outlook express and you are makeing a letter to send, and to go to find attachment, you get the same stupid tiny window YOU CAN NOT EXPAND THIS WINDOW THIS TIME.
 
That will always be seen. The browser for locating files for attachments on outgoing email is just as small as the one used for saving a download into a specific folder of choice. You will see that even on XP. As far as the button sticking in on the browser window you will probably find a glitch with IE 6 as the problem.

There is a repair tool for IE 6.0 if you are not forced to download and install a fresh copy. In the Control Panel go to the add/remove programs icon to open that up.Once that is open you go down until you see the listings for IE 6 and the internet tools option. Select the Repair Internet Explorer option and click on the ok button to try this out. Once this is done restart the system. If it still sees problems then you will be stuck removing and reinstalling IE 6.
 
This is not a IE6 problem as it also does it with Open Office and Outlook Express for that matter.

It must be some windows system file that IE, Open Office, OE calls up.

No doubt I think to get a workable fix one might have to hack the Registry, of cause Microsoft has most likely lost interest in Windows 98 support.
 
Windows 98 support was cancelled in June. It is a program problem. You can set the details view as a default when you open up instances of windows explorer, but you can't do it for programs that I know of. It's an irritating trend that was carried on into XP as well.
 
Gee that reminds me I have to reinstall FireFox after trying out the beta 2 version. You don't detail buttons in FireFox. :P

ummm now I am not trying to argue the point just to waste the time of the day, if it is a program problem how come it does it with Microsoft programs & Open Office.

One thing you could try even in 98 is the system file checker to see there are any glitches with Windows files themselves. You simply type "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt to start that going. You will need to have the Windows cd onhand.
 
Because it's a conspiracy between Microsoft, Sun and the Republicans to control the world and thus the world's oil supply? I dunno. You run into non-resizable Windows in tons of different applications, but not all. As far as the detailed view, Windows seems to like defaulting to the basic listing. ;)
 
One idea is a simple trip to the "tools" link on the explorer bar in Windows Explorer itself and click on the "folder options". Once there put a check mark next to remember each folder's view settings and just ignore the locked inplace size of the little windows that comes up. :D

I dont think it will be a "glitches with Windows files" I am sure this is a standard Microsoft setup or ballsup.

Don't worry too much. When running 98 on the old systems a reinstall was the simple method of overwriting the problems with the prior installation. I knew someone that would always zero fill a drive whenever any problem came up. That was something to see. :P
 
PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM THAT DEVELOPS AS THE SYSTEM GETS OLD, A REINSTALL WILL NOT FIX IT,

read though the thread even XP has it, it is not a personnel setup either
 
Thanks PC eye I am sure you found the answer.

I can not believe I am the only one asking for this, when you change to details you can scroll down and look for a file faster, at least that is what I think.

I found just about everything about Microsoft defaults to the option that gets on my tit.
 
Save that link for reference there. It has some 300+ tweaks for a variety of things. One free registry guide for all versions of Windows from 95 up prior to the impending release of Vista covers a good number of changes you can make by directly editing the system registry.

Unfortunately it lacked what you needed there. But it's a good reference to have onhand. You download the free version of the guide at http://www.winguides.com/guides.php?guide=software When you download the #85 vbs type file to a folder on the drive all you have to do is double click on the file itself to see the change go into the registry. Give it a try and see how it goes.
