cpu 99% when doing simple things

loque that thing about the virus was not directed at you. it was at murphy who suggested id run hijack this. if he had read the thread then he would have seen my log. so im sorry. and i do know what system idle process is. its sort of self explanatory if you know the english language. im not trying to insult anyone, sorry if it seemed like it. as you can see im the clueless one here as i am the one asking for help.

if anyone has any idea why it does this then please do tell. and archangel no its not running slow. ill have winamp or itunes up while im just surfing the internet. but once i see something wrong with a song title i would go into the song info and simply change the title of the song. once i hit enter then the usage will jump up to the 90s and the song will just start skipping and the computer will just slow down for about 15-20 seconds, then go back to normal. its really annoying bc im currently trying to change the titles of alot of my songs.

also when i open a new firefox window then the usage will jump up to the 80s and 90s until the page is down loading then itll go back down.

i would be so grateful if someone can help me find a solution.

He stated "the only thing thats using the cpu is system idle process". The System Idle Process does not use CPU, it's just a counter, as I stated. So, no, I don't think he does know what the System Idle Process is.

He stated that system idle process was at 99% and then he said that was when procesor usage was 0%. He never said it was using the processor. Note why right after he said processor usage was at 0%

He stated numerous times that the problem is with certain programs. He was stating that its normal until those certain programs or process are used.

And your welcome

i was actually just going to start a new thread about this, becuase my computer is doing the exact same thing, except its running full cpu the entire time. i'm sweeping the system with norton antivirus to see if that helps, but any ideas?

i dunno. With the origional post here we cant seem to figure out the problem. What i do in these circumstances is i just reformat and reinstal windows. It might take a lot of extra work (backing up, spending the time reformating and reinstalling) but it usually works. Plus it helps get rid of anything that you dont want to be there that you havent noticed.

I know that other people on the forums have other opinions. This is just mine and im not saying its the easiest and most efficient way to go. Its just worked for me

And that's why I said that behaviour is completely normal, which it is. If he is having other problems then I'm not sure why, perhaps a reinstall would fix them. But the System Idle running at 99 and CPU at zero is normal. I'm just clarifying that in case he didn't know. If he does, then that's fine too. I'm not sure what your issue is with me stating that.

But, if people don't completely agree with you, then they're stupid, right?

maybe i should reinstall windows then? there are no viruses on my comp, and its a brand new computer just built it 2 weeks ago. reinstall would fix this? or maybe a system resotre?

No its the people that try to "clarify" things that the people already know. Like i said if you read what he said you waould have noticed that he had already stated what he knew. That idel process at 99% = cpu usage 0%

well if you just built it 2 weeks ago then i dont think a reinstal would fix. I mean it couldnt hurt to try. But usually i reinstall when it starts acting up after 6 months to a year.

I've read the thread several times over, and you saying that I haven't read it is irrelevant anyway now. Actually, the first time he even mentions the System Idle Process is when he says:
well like i said if i look in the task manager then everything is normal the only thing thats using the cpu is system idle process or something, and thats when it says the cpu usage is at 0%
Which I when I stepped in to clarify that there isn't a problem with that. I wasn't saying there wasn't a problem at all, because he clearly is having problems with CPU usage spiking on certain apps. But that particular behaviour was normal, and so I pointed that out.

As I stated earlier, I'm not sure what your issue with my original post which was entirely factual, but then this is the Internet after all, I need to expect such behaviour.

ok im very sure i know what the system idle process is and im sure both of you do also so can we just drop it? its a silly thing to argue about over the internet.

can someone just tell me if its normal to be doing that? i know a reinstall is not necessary. or aybe its just my computer that uses a little more of the cpu to pull up windows and such. its not as bad when i pull up windows like firefox. most of the time itll go up to 60-805. its just when im working aruond in winamp or itunes.

if i open a program like itunes or picasa or something then itll jump up to 100% for about a minute. i just need a simple advice as to what i should do or where to look but this thread has only given me the same answer. except for those of you who actually helped by suggesting something that wasnt already suggested and proven not working. thank you...

now if only someone knew what was wrong. its been frustrating me for about a month now.

ok now its just at 100 constantly whenever im using a major program like google sketchup. its really aggravating me..

Reading this whole threat... it sounds like your windows registry is a bit ****ed up (to put it that way)

have you ever tried running System mechanig, and registry mechanic?

does anyone have any idea whats wrong, or know where to direct me?? i would call dell but that would literally be my 15th time and im tired of getting turned up at India. im seriously about to smash this computer. its driving me nuts

I am experiencing the same thing as andy ... especially while running windows explorer, changing file names, multitasking, etc. have athlon 64x2 4800 with 2.5 gigs of ram. my system idle will run when I am clearly not idle and will use up all my cpu power for about a minute or two. HJT is clean, no virus, spyware, reg clean and defrag regularly.

this seems like a rare case, but there has to be an explanation out there somewhere. I've tried looking all over, and no one can seem to find an answer.

a small update ... was moving some things around tonite and I noticed my sys idle kicked in while using my right-click menu. it would get stuck on my send button. Then I remembered that I have outlook disabled and maybe even uninstalled, so I think windows freaks out when I do that.
I disabled all outlook shell extensions with ShellExView to see if that would help. no go. any suggestions other than re-installing outlook or just not scrolling past the "send to" arrow?
