new mobo for friend -- lots of questions

my friend is getting a new mobo for his intel celeron @ 2.4ghz, his old mobo has no agp 4x/8x so hes gettin a new mobo to get a new graphics card

is a "via" chipset bad?

is sis better

is intel chipsets the best?

what do i expect while installing this?

-this is my first mobo install, any tips?

-does the new mobo have drivers etc like a graphics card?

do all socket 478 suppourt celeron?

Use common sense, ground yourself on the case before touching any components, don't force anything...

Depending on the BIOS, revision, etc etc of the board and the processor. It usally isn't a problem. But an example, some SocketA motherboards don't support the Athlon XP or the Sempron processors.

Yes, they are terrible performers. Especially the P4 chipsets. Dogs.

For the P4, most definitely. There are a couple of not so good ones you might want to avoid though.

Look for the i875p chipset. The i865 chipset is a pain in the nuts.

Yes. The VIA has those crappy 4-in-1 drivers that are junk. Intel has an infupdate kit that you will want to install. Then you'll just have your LAN drivers.

VIA's not that bad! They had some really great chipsets back during the SocketA days. Hehe, but don't even get me started with SIS :P
 
I've yet to see one good solid VIA chipset to be truthful. AMD or Intel.

The two best things that happened for AMD were the AMD and nVIDIA chipsets.

For Intel, the VIAs I have seen were smoked in both P3 and P4 systems. The Intel was more reliable too. There seems to be something said for a chipset made by the CPU manufacturer.

What does the old MOBO have? If it is a PCI E x16, you are downjgrading going to AGP...

uhh obviously only pci 1x or he would get a better card in the first place, there are no mobos for s478 that have pci e x16 that I can find.

also I just upgraded to an 850 pro from my old 9200. im willing to sell him it for 40$ (canadian:rolleyes: )so he would rather just buy that than a nib one for 75+tax+shipping online at ncix or tigerdirect. we cant buy from newegg in canada.... :confused:

Before nForce 2, VIA made some of the best chipsets for the Athlon XPs. Intels move towards RAMBUS allowed VIA to make significant inroads there as well.

These days, though, VIA really only focuses on budget chipsets.

you dont get it, im living in canada, find me a mobo with pci x16 on a canadian site. most all of the pci x6 s478 boards have been discontinued and you cannot purchase them.

VIA were only considered the best chips for AMD because there really was nothing else avalaible on the market for AMD. When you have nothing else to pick from, of course they are considered the best. AMD should have kept making their own. They were quite impressive for their time.
 
sorry for not posting this but he has a mini-atx case so it must be a mATX mobo

is the install of a mobo this simple?

1. take ram, heatsink,cpu, power connectors off old mobo

2. unscrew mobo from chassis

3. screw new mobo on (can sum1 tell me how to do spacers/screws i dont get it)

4. plug in ram, gpu, cpu, heatsink, power connectors, fp stuff, fans

5. (how do i install drivers or watever for mobo)

I would probably get the Intel board. It's the most reliable out of the bunch. No overclocking features, but that doesn't matter if he's not into that. They are just rock solid.
