AMD going to bounce back?

Since there is so much talk about Intels awesome C2Ds I just figured I'd go see if AMD was going to do something or just sit on their ass.

Quad-Core in 2007 and the 4x4 architecture

This was a given since the next logical step from dual-core is quad-core.

Slightly more interesting....
Athlon 64 6000+

Eventually they will HAVE to change their damn naming structure....or since they have ATi, they will adapt like ATi does...eventually we will have Athlon 64 X19000s and AMD will start just adding random letters to bring some variety to it. :P

I lil more interesting....
“Merged” CPU-GPU in 2008, Says AMD Chief Technologist.
Unified CPU-GPU to Be Made Using 45nm Process Technology
http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20060925235302.html
Seems pretty logical to research this since they bought ATi.
I think this would be pretty sweet if they could pull it off well.

Oh well so nothing too spectacular coming from AMD too soon....or affordable at least.

AMD has 4x4 coming, and K8L on the horizon. Eh, really we're comparing latest technology to AMD's relatively "aged" technology. But, they're the ones falling behind. They're having problems geting stock voltage to work on their next fab process, and Intel I think is already getting ready to DITCH 65nm fab. AMD has stated they are going to speed up their development cycles to try to catch up to Intel in like 2 years, but what kind of impact will that have on quality of end product? Who knows...

Well the first link is ancient ancient ancient, but the other two are interesting...

I think that AMD really needs to work harder to scrap 90nm and get onto 65 and later 45nm, rather than bringing out more faster processors.

Truth is, in my opinion, that AMD already revealed their trump card. When you're playing poker you never reveal your hand until the end. AMD jumped the gun in a race to get ahead and get market share. They showed their hold. True, they showed up Intel, but not for long. They woke the sleeping giant and Intel just flat out smoked them.

Intel has the money, Intel has the backing, Intel has the staff and Intel has the fabs. AMD has nothing. They are a *very* small company by comparison. To put it into the simplest terms, Intel is 7-11 and AMD is Jay's Variety.

I have a peculiar feeling that Intel won't allow themselves to be found in the same position again. I could be wrong on that, of course, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. Frankly I think AMD is going to have to settle for second best.

I kinda agree but how long was the a64 out for? Cuz thats when i see amd taking the lead, and to me that feels like at least 3 years ago.

It's hard to wait for the end when there is no end. The CPU battle will go on until one company goes bankrupt. Wait 2 years and I can guarantee the performance crown will change hands at least 4 or 5 times. It's not completely about company size, it's timing. AMD had to release their 64bit CPUs before Intel or they would be in a bigger hole than they are in now since it would have been Intels trump card. You still have to remember AMD hasn't released any major improvement to their line since going Dual-Core. They are still using the same 90nm architecture and all they are doing is milking every clock cycle they can get out of it until they can release something better. This could be viewed as either a sign that they have run out of ideas or a sign that something big may be coming. Their 4x4 idea sounds promising but expensive so they may become like the underdog company for rich performance freaks (like VoodooPC...super expensive but bleeding edge performance.) I pray it doesnt come to this because if Intel overruns the CPU market then there would be no competition since they are the only 2 CPU manufacturers that focus on the x86 architecture.
I don't AMD will settle for second best, they will make something better and then Intel will figure out how to beat it and the AMD will beat that and so on and so forth. This is pretty much the exact same thing that is happening with the 2 GPU giants. Also, AMD bought ATi so "Jay's Variety" must be doing something right (I am intrigued by the GPU/CPU combo they are working on). :P

I think that Intel will have the crown for at least mid 2007, just because they have quad core coming first and they are one step ahead of AMD currently. They can milk their Core 2 architecture for awhile, as well as switching to 45nm processing and making other advancements.

I would love to see AMD come out with there CPU and GPU in 1. Apparently this is to be ready by 2008, but I don't think that it will.

Despite the fact that I have an Intel C2D, I would love to see AMD's 4x4 chip kick the ass out of Intel's Kentsfield. It's only going to push the race further. :)

That would be quite funny, but I highly doubt that it happens.
