Staying with AMD

I'm going to wait and see what Amd does over the next few months before I upgrade. One thing I would like to know is there any way to tell what socket will the K8-L be when it comes out? If it going to be the AM2 then I would like to start buying some parts such as my mobo and ram. Please don't bash me for staying with AMD, you see I don't do any overclocking nor will I ever, All I do is play a few games and do some multitasking at times. This is my current setup.I appreciate any advice that you can give me . Thanks

My System
asus AN8 SLI Premium mobo
Amd 64x2 4400+ dual core cpu
enermax 600watt psu
2 6800 GS Evga 256mb boards
2 gb of Cosair dual channel pc3200 (4 x 512 )
Pri. HD WD 10,000 rpm 74gb sata raptor
Sec > HD WD 7200 rpm 250gb sata
HP DL DVD lightscribe burner
NEC DL DVD burner
Case Aspire Navigator

Isnt the A8N a s939 ( i assume AN8 is a type... since thats ABit :) )
i would strongly reccomend a AM2 motherboard tough, since its newer, and uses DDR2 memory... i think its the way to go.

I know my A8N is s939 :P Honestly, there's very little difference in the two sockets and the RAM performace.

If you're debating going to AM2, I would only go that route if it's as cheap/cheaper and you plan to upgrade later. The performace increase usally isn't that great. Sometimes there's little more than a second between beachmarks, or a few frames per second.

yes... there isnt much of an performance difference between AM2 and s939... sometimes s939 even outperforms it... however (like its said in the previous post) for future upgrading, AM2 is surely the way to do (if you absolutely want AMD) and they also have lower costs in the RAM for example

also.. i saw 2 6800GS in your list.. do you already have parts of the list? or are you going to buy everything on it?

The parts you see in my sig is my current setup. I'm considering upgrading to the socket AM2 and I was asking for advice about what the future CPU sockets would be from AMD. I don't want to buy a new mobo socket AM2 and then a month later AM3 or whatever come out. I know technology changes quickly with computers and for once I 'd like to get my moneys worth out of a system. I appreciate the help and advice thanks to all.

Technology does change fast indeed... but sockets tend to stay for some time :) i think AM2 will be around for a wile.

Yep, but Socket F is also out (1207 pins) Right now it is just a server socket, but I think that it will be desktop soon enough.

Well do you need an upgrade?

If you do, I'd aim for a single higher end videocard.

I'd go with the AM2 its the brand new socket. Features the memory controller right on the CPU instead of on the M.B. . Very quick!

Personally, your computer isn't that bad, and it's not worth getting a new CPU/Mobo/memory for a slight upgradeability gain. Just upgrade your video cards to a single X1900XT and fold with it..

It sounded to me like he had already made up his mind to make the jump to the next slot type. I agree his system looks pretty good the way it is.

So , looking at what you have suggested all I need to do is upgrade my video cards to just one high end card. I guess the SLI is pretty much not worth the hype then. I was just thinking If I went to a AM2 socket ,then if I chose to go to the Quad cores when they come out all I would need is the CPU. Maybe I should just see what the first of the year brings. Thanks for the Info .

SLi is worth the hype, but your cards dont do it justice. And wait to get AM2 for while.

Socket F is going to remain a server only socket.

AMD's next socket is going to be Socket AM3, which will still have 940 pins, and it is rumored that AM3 processors will work with AM2 motherboards.
