Ive seen a few cards that are 128mb and up to 256, am i right in guessing that the card is 128 but the card CAN if needed take an extra 128 from the computers memory?
am i right?

"shared video memory paradigm" is the term used there. If you don't have video memory dedicated for the video card some of the system memory will used by the card. If you have 1gb of ram and throw on a 128mb card the amount that can be taken for video would be 1,000mb - 128mb = 872mb.

I think you are referring to turbocache, and yes, that is correct. Although don't expect it to perform as well as a 256MB card with the same specs.

But no, turbocache/hyper memory is just used in low end nvidia/ati cards. Such as the 7300gs, it can have 128 onboard with turbocache ability up to 512mb. Thus, using up 384megs of your ram.
