New ATI X1300 Is Crashing My Computer - Please Help! :-)

Im new to your forum.. Im here for some help.. im not a newb when it comes to computers but this one has me stumped.. maybe someone else has had the same problem and knows the answer so im here for help.. thanks in advance:-)

This is the second X1300 I had, Though the first one was defective because of what it was doing but this one is doing the same thing. So I am almost posative its not the card, its somehting else. Before installing the card I looked for a way to disable the OB video with no luck.. Nothing in bios - no jumpers, so i assume its auto. I also uninstalled the Nvidia Display drivers (still needed the Nvidia network card and other drivers for my mobo) Then installed the card and started up (could only get video out of the DVI port but im sure thats how all new cards are) once i pluged in my projector to the dvi port i seen the desktop.. this was good.. so i installed the drivers and restarted my computer like it said.. I surfed the web and watched a video for about an hour on the new card and it worked awsome, then when i went to test it out in a game and it looked awsome and worked awsome, I was gettin 98fps.. needless to say i was very impresed, I was only gettin 27-30 before the upgrade.. I went ahead playing the game but after 2 mins or so it froze and all i seen was a breen screen with lines on it.. I had no choice but to restart my computer. I tried it again with a diffrent game and the same thing happened.. I decided it might have been the DVI port or somehting so I tried it with S-Video and it also crashed. I check the biostar websight for BIOS updates to help this but there was none. To me this seems like the card is ok until u demand power out of it. maybe its starving for power. So i tried it on my other computer (biostar GeForce 6100 [NOT T-force] with AMD 3500+) and it did the same thing.. that computer has a 300 watt psu. Anyone know if an ATI card is compadable with this Nvidia based motherboard? I already lost a few bucks on shipping and the seller and I are not gettin allong so there is no way I can return the card so I need to see if I can get it to work. Any advise on what to try or what it can be.. Thanks for the help :confused:

Besides not favoring the make and model board your power is lacking quite a bit. Does that model board have onboard video? I run the MSI Radeon X1300 Pro here on an Asus A8N SLI nForce 4 with no problems. But I just happen to run an Antec TP II 480w supply. The brand supply sounds like a low grade brand there as well as lower powered. Try a better make and model supply.
 
hmm.. Bangor, WA not ringing a bell.. Im just called Subdude199 because its a gay name I made when i was 17, ever since I was 16 I have been competing in Sound Pressure Level competation using Subwoofers.. So i made the SubWoof17 back then, then I started gettin alot of junk mail so i changed it to SubDude17.. Then 2 years later I wanted to update the age but 19 was taken.. so i added the 199. Im 20 now and gettin ready to change it up.. but I have had this name for so long and so many people know me i might just keep it.
 
the power supply is new.. buy yes im sure its not a good brand.. this video card says it needs 350 watts min.. I had a 300 at the time and i was short on money so i went for the 400.. but that could be my problem eh?.. Well I will go buy a good PSU tommorow and see if that fixes things.. Is it a Sapphire....? Because I know Sapphire sometimes comes with bad drivers and you need to download them straight from ATi......
 
No i dont believe it is. I was told to stay away from them if i can.. It does not say that on the box at all, also..I tried with the drivers from the Cd and downloading from ATI.com with the same results both times.
 
With more then one card seeing the same problem you could switch models and still end up seeing the same thing. In your sig you have two different makes of memory there to take a serious look at. A mismatch of types can cause a long list of problems.
 
I know what you mean.. and actually at the time of testing I only had the one stick of 1GB ram.. I can overclock alot more with the one good stick in there.. but when the card was not working right I went back to the stock clock (even tho the PCI-E was still at stock clock speed), I thought that might have effected it but it didnt.. I put the extra 256 in for now.. but most of the time it is not in there because im overclocked. I forget off the top of my head what kind of ram it is exactly.. It was not the cheepest brand i could find but it was definatly not the top end ram. It was about $135 plus shipping for it.. its PC3200 but its not dual channel.
 
I removed the 256 to keep things simple. Here is all the info I can offer until i open my case

Talk about mismatched memory. The 256mb dimm is a PC2700 not PC3200. That will force the 1gb dimm to backclock. And DDR memory is dual channel memory. The 200mhz seen in the bios is multiplied by the two channels to see the 400mhz total. Is the 1gb memory a single or dual sided dimm? The dual sided will have ic chips lined up on both sides where the single sided has just the one row on one side only.
 
the 1gb is dual sided. So what your saying is throw this 256 stick i got away (use it in one of my backup rigs) its just hurting me?
 
The larger dimm is faster at DDR400 while the 256mb dimm is at DDR333. If you want performance and dual channel mode enabled you would grab a second PC3200 1gb dimm to get the 2gb total. You wondered why you have to pull the smaller dimm out to oc? There's the answer. When you go back and look at the memory timings and see 166mhz and double that you come up with 333mhz. The 200mhz is for the 1gb dimm that sees 2x200mhx = 400mhz.

when this picture was taken there was only the one good stick or ram in there. BUT see on the botton how it says differental clock input - supported.. I thin that means it can run at 166 or 200... i just looked at the other 256 and it is pc3200 (but it was not in when this picture was taken)


so i assume it defaults at 200 i hope.. any way i can check





(also, still looking for help on the vid card issue.. anyone.:) )
 
Apparently Everest is referring to the hardware profile it saved initially to see the same reference there. The 256mb dimm may have been mislabled or those are the two fsb speeds available. The board probably won't run PC2100 DDR266 dimms. The games seeing freeze ups doesn't always point at the card.

The dimms are different brands and could well be different types. Plus you still have the under powered system with the supply there that you are using with a converter not the full 24pin connector. That model board does have the requirement for a 24pin supply. You can see that in the specifications at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813138264
 
i see.. im going to order that powersupply asap.. thanks for the advise.. so a good psu will most likely help for fix my vid card problem
 
It sounds like you are underpowering the system there. The Socket 939 definitely require a 24pin model supply. On the Socket 754 boards there were several that could use the 20 to 24pin adapter and still see good results. But that isn't so true with the S939 boards. There are different power configurations on the newer boards where this is advised.
 
ok.. definatly going with a true 24pin new 585watt PSU from tiger

crossin fingers that this fixes my vid card problem..thanks for all the advise guys.. LOVE the forum.. been a member for less than 24hrs.. got 22post already.. lol.. make that 31
