Hey... I nwo have Windows media Center Edition... and I Hate it... I can buy Windows XP professional for cheap scince I know a guy who works at a computer store... and my question is... is this wise? and How do i do it? just put the CD in the drive? and it changes it all? Sorry im a Noob to the technical aspect of computers... i just dont want to mess up my comp... I need it for work.

Thanks in advance. DJ CON

Just boot from the CD and follow the directions to wipe out the harddrive and start fresh. After that it is pretty much all automatic.

Agreed...there might be an upgrade option, but if you actually want to get rid of all the old crap, I'd do a clean install. I've never had much luck with upgrades...

actually ya its that simple, and im not sure if its a good decision i have no knwoledg eon that program, but ya just put the disc in you might have ot set the drive to boot from cd

ook thanks... Also is their anyway to save my files, but change the OS? or is that not possible without an external HD, or flash drive?

thanks alot for the replies... and so quick too!

With the XP installer you may be able to get away with deletion of the current installation of the Media Center Edition. If you had an old drive lying around you could partition and format that as a temporary storage drive. After the clean install of Pro you could then copy the files back onto the host drive.

I think you should note the windows XP MCE is pretty much the same as Pro, since MCE is based off pro.

And Pro only has a few minor differences from the home version. A few things added and an extra cd come with the Pro version. Everything else but the name is identical.

Ya I know its basically the same... But My computer always crashes... and my familys computer with pro on it never does... The only programs i have are the stock ones(minus all the FREE Programs, and Trials), Cool Edit Pro, And Limewire... so tis nto like im program crazy or file crazy, ive only used about 5 GB... Thanks tho

If you are able to save the current partition that will preserve any files outside of the Windows, DocumentsandSettings, and Program Files directories. Any softwares would obviously have to be reinstalled along with the drivers for the hardwares installed. The main support site if you need drivers updates is at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1118241&lang=en

Oh, so like, For my DVD burner, and card readers and all that, thee drivers would have to be reinstalled? If i went Pro?

thansk for the help.

The same drivers for the Home version are the same for Pro. The only ones that are different are those for the 64bit edition. The Pro version sees a few files added at the root of C. Those three files are the msdos.sys, io.sys, and config.sys files there. The others like boot.ini, ntdetect.com, ntldr, and pagefile.sys remain the same.

OK thanks.

I stopped using limewire alltogether about 6 months ago. I downloaded one song on it and all of the sudden windows explorer was taking up 99% of the cpu.....

I strictly use bittorrent now. Much safer

I tried Limewire to get familiar with it some time back and said forget this! It took up the entire bandwidth with the slow downloads tried there. You can definitely find a better downloader.
