Slave vs. Master drives

I just loaded in an extra DVD-ROM drive into my computer (with a CD-ROM as master). Does having it set to slave make it slower than if set to master? What exactly is the difference? I've been getting a slight jitter from my DVD playback, and I was wondering if the jumper settings have anything to do with it.

no, jumpers have to deal with how the system identifies each device
 
The jumper setting tells the controller card on a drive where on the ide cable the drive is located. The master/slave setting allows one drive's controller card to tell the other drive's when it can transfer data. The glitches being seen in playback have more to do with any blurring of the lazer lens where you may need a lens cleaner, the disk has a scratch, finger mark, or the video itself has a defect when originally burned to disk. It could also be a software problem with the player itself.
 
Some drives do not like to be set as a slave. Try putting the DVD as a master and check if you still get jitters. If you still get jitters try turning of your AV.
 
I take offence in that, that card is totally able to play a DVD. My original 800mhz CPU with a 16mb video card played DVD's nicely. I've even oc'ed my video card a little bit, it'll play ROTK well, and MOHAA on full settings at 1024x768.

Here I used to alternate dvd with cd drives and never saw any glitches when either was set as master or slave. In fact I added a secoond cd drive just for the games that ran off of a cd. That way I always had a cd or dvd burner free. Before the second hard drive came along that was a nice setup. :D
