Overall, the performance of a E6300 lies just under a AMD X2 5000 (2.6GHz). So, go for a E6300.

Personally I would spend the extra $40 and get the E6400, especially since you aren't overclocking. Or you could spend some more and get the E6600, since it also had 4MB of L2 Cache.
yet again, i don't know if i need the E6400, I'm not planning to do any extreme
work on it.
What is the most intensive program you are going to run? Sounds like all you need is a E6300 or a Athlon 3000.
