Bad IDE Channel?

Ok, I have a Samsung CD Drive. When I try to boot from a CD, such as an Ubuntu CD or Windows CD, my computer just starts beeping like crazy. In my BIOS, instead of Samsung it says either Saefung or Saesung. My Toshiba CD drive was being read as Toshaba. I have tried three CD drives. I would really like to get the problem sorted out, cause having a computer with no OS kinda sucks.

It sounds more like a memory if not bios problem with the beeping heard there. How would you describe the beeps heard a long beep followed by two or more short beeps? Bad ram, a bad video card, or other hardware defects are indicated by anything other then the single default beep heard on a normal running system. The beep code chart is seen at http://www.ami.com/support/doc/AMIBIOS-codes.pdf

Look over the codes there just the same. It may not turn out to be a failed hardware but a need to reseat the memory even update the bios. Bios EProms can usually be bought separate from the manufaturer if needed for about $25 plus shipping. You just need the correct tool to those inserted correctly.

I reseated my processor, memory, and graphics card yesterday before I took it to my uncle.

The idea of reseating there was to rule out a dimm or the card being lifted up in the slot or the need to blow out dust and debris collected there. Hopefully that was all that was needed. Otherwise your uncle will probably be pointing one thing or another that will have to be replaced.

Did you try another ribbon cable? It has nothing to do with reseating anything. The thing to do would have been to hook an HDD up to that channel and see what happens. If it's the same thing, one could narrow it down to a ribbon or a controller. Also you can hook the CDROM up to the primary and see what happens. If it still does it, the BIOS is suspect.

I put in a Maxtor IDE drive with Ubuntu loaded on it, and it froze upon boot. I went into the BIOS, and it was being read as Pegyrt instead of Maxtor. I tired another ribbon cable, and it still did the same thing.

Yeah, then a controller or BIOS is suspect. You've done all the right things to narrow it down. You could try flashing the BIOS to see if it cures any corruption. I don't see how you have anything to lose at this point.
