Problems Problems..

I have 2 computers. Recently one of them wouldnt not turn on at all. I thought maybe the power supply was done so i changed it and it works fine. Yesterday the same thing happened to the other computer. I changed the power supply thinking maybe the same thing, but i still cant seem to fire anything up. Power is going to the new supply, but nothing will fire up, not even the new supply.

The computer itself was custom built about 2 1/2 years ago.

Gigabyte K8Triton Nforce 3 motherboard (less than a year old)
Nvdida Geforce 5950 Ultra
2gig Corsair Ram (less than year old)
Amd Athlon 3500 cpu (less than year old)
Seagate 200g HD
430 w Power Supply (new)

Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks.
 
Besides the breaker switch on the back of the supply itself check the wiring harness coming from the front panel to see if one of the wires for the power button came off while you were swapping out the supply. That will stall everything right there and give the appearance of a bad supply or board.
 
Well i just returned the power supply and exchanged on the off chance it could be defective. Same result. Power button wire is ok. I am not all that savy when it comes to this, but sounds like a board problem? Just bought it not that long ago.
 
Have you heard any beeps or does it just sit still? The beep error codes will point out which hardware could have failed. A look over the board to see if you find any bad caps is an idea. That would be one thing to consider. If you bought a supply with a 20pin not 24 or 20+4pin connector that will stall a 939 board fast. Is that the Gigabyte model seen in your sig?
 
Well, seeing as how the connector on the G8 Triton isn't 24 pin, I guess that won't be a problem now, will it. A standard P4 PSU with the 4 pin molex that the P4 uses is what is needed.

Kreator, it does indeed sound like the board that is the problem. I don't know where he got the 24 pin idea from, but I would imagine it came from the same place as the rest of his ideas.

We won't say where your ideas come from. :eek:

On several 20pin supplies you will still find the four wire plug. AMD boards also use that as well as P4 model boards. If that was already plugged in and the board still failed to start the board is another doa special.

24 pin does not equal 20+4 pin ace. Nice try at a save though.

No, I'm not having problems. You said 24 pin. I would like to see you plug a 24 pin connector into a 20 pin socket.. It is quite obvious that you meant by your statement was that he had a 24 pin connector and he would have to plug the 20 pin connector in PLUS the 4 pin molex beside it.

Like I said, nice try at a save.. You should have at least made yourself familiar with the board first before you tried to offer advice and lead him off in the wrong direction.

Anyways, I'm done with this.. I know you will be back to try and save face, but I don't even care how you attempt it.
 
You guys are too much :P

The power supply came with a 20 pin plug with the option to slide on a 4 pin to make it 24. The board is 20 pin.
I stripped it down to just the board, ram and cpu and it still never came on. No beeps, no lights..nothing. Pulled out the cpu and looked at it and from what i can see, it looked ok to me. I sent Gigabyte a mail to tech support and told them what was going on, of course no reply. Anyhow the board is cheaper now than when i bought it, maybe i will just pay the 70 bucks and get a new one. Probably go with an Asus this time since my last 2 (MSI and Gigabyte) havent faired well for me. Shipping the old one out so they can send me back a refurbished one isnt gonna even be worth it to me. Thanks guys for your help.
 
If it wasn't any bad caps you probably saw the main chipset or bios go there. It was pointing at the board as the likely problem while not ruling out the supply either. Have you tried a replacement battery to see if that will kick it over? When the original battery went on a board here in just a little over a year's time the system seemed dead. The simple deduction of trying a new battery saw the old case running well until the cpu cooked one day.
