i have a choice..... to either get a laptop (a nice one)
or i can choose to build my own computer (a good one )
but if i compared them to price they'd be around the same price of under 2k

i already have a good gateway desktop....with upgraded stuff

and the laptop i dont go to school (homeschool, so i use this desktop)
but ill be working soon and be traveling and such so the laptop could come in handy.....

or i can build a protable all in one computer....

what should i do?

If you can use your dads laptop, and are building a new computer in December or January, why not just wait until then, build your computer, and then use his laptop?

I bought my laptop used, simply because I got it so cheap. I've used it ONCE on a trip to New Mexico, and I used it for a total of 1 hour or so in 3 days. Realistically, you dont even need a laptop yet probably, I know I dont.

Do you plan to use your pc for gaming? If so a laptop would not be wise, because of the power limitations. Go all out with a custom desktop and wait until the new Nvidia and Ati cards come out (g80 and r600 or something like that), get a nice dual core processor and DDR2 ram.

Then for sure go with a desktop. Ithink you will ne feel comfortable gaming on a laptop...Ok, maybe in bed...this would be a nice choice...to play games at night in your bed, using a laptop.

Seriouslly, buy a laptop if you need one. If you don't, then go with a desktop.

Depends on your needs. I have an HP/Compaq NC 4200 12" Laptop that is pretty much for work use only. I don't load any games on it, I don't use it for anything other than configuring and testing things onsite. It dual boots windows and linux, and I sometimes use it to audit security.

For this a small portable laptop seems best for my needs. Since I am lugging it around in a backpack with test parts and tools, I am roughly hauling around 50lbs of crap in a bag. The 12" laptop is light and small making it easier for me to carry around. It also has a DVD/RW drive which is external, and I keep it in the car or wherever and not in the bag. I do most of my installs over the network on this rig.

So, for me, a laptop is nearly a tool for work and not something for entertainment. I do all my downloads/gaming on my Desktop. I think for my needs the smallest, and lightest laptops are best. I don't like big bulky laptops, and I Think gaming on laptops is kind of pointless considering the clock downs and tweaks they get for best performance/battery life.

I would say if you need the laptop for work and will be hauling it around, get one that has all the features you need in the field, and get the smallest light weight one as possible.
