External Hardrive problem...

Yesterday i put my hard drive on as i usually would but this time my pc said a new usb port has been detected, however i had the USB Cable in the same port. I noticed my external hard drive would come on but my pc just wouldnt detect it, the lights would be on my hard drive but it wouldnt be on my computer.

This happened yesterday, the only thing i done to my pc is when i bought a cd and the cd wouldnt load. This program told me that if the c.d didnt load i would have to go into device manager click on IDEA ATA/ATAPI controllers. I then went on Primary IDE Channel and changed the transfer type to PIO only.

This is the only thing i have done to my pc, i even changed it back to DMA if available and my hard drive still doesnt work.

Can somebody please tell me what i could do because i have ALOT of important things on my hard drive that i really really need to get back.

btw i noticed if i go onto device manager its under disk drives but its just called "usb device" is there anyway i can get into it so i can just back up some files?????

Are you using the same USB cable as before? Try using a different one, and try a different port.

I plugged my O2 Xda phone into my pc using a USB cable i'd found lying aroud, but the computer only detected it as "Unknown USB Device" but the phone would still have its charging light on.
I changed the USB cable and it all worked correclty.

If your priority concern is to read what's on the drive, you could remove it from it's enclosure and fit it inside your PC as a slave. If the drive works okay, leave it there.

if you plug it in as a Slave drive (2nd hdd) onto your computer, the main hdd that you already have windows on will be able to access it.
You will just have another drive listed under "My Computer"

I was wondering how exactly do i put my external hardrive as the slave drive? I know on a normal one theres like a type of clip... i jus wanted to know how to do it with this one because i dont want to end up breaking my pc!

can n e 1 let me kno

Well first off.. what size is the external drive? Physical size that is!

If its a Laptop drive (the HDD itself is 2.5 inch long) then you won't be able to do it without buying an adaptor.
