ThinkPad
I've found that the Toshiba Satellite series is very reliable
HAHAHAHHAAHAHA
yeah right..
well actually, I've had 2 Toshiba's. The first one was great and lasted me a long time. Then I got another Toshiba in 2004, it was the worst laptop i have ever owned. Not even after two months after buying it, I started having problems with it. The AC adapter completely shit the brick, Toshiba wouldn't send me another one unless I sent them the whole damn laptop. I send it to them, It took FedEx 1 week to get it to them, took Toshiba 2 weeks to look at it, then they said it was the AC adapter (i was like "no shit"), then it took them a week before they actually sent it back to me, and of course it took FedEx a week to get it back to me. Then less 2 months later, the connector for the AC adapter went (inside the laptop) so rather than mailing it in I brought it to one of their subcontractors that was 50 miles away. I bring it to them, I told them exactly what the problem was and asked them if they would fix it under warranty, they said yes. So I left it there on a Friday, I drive back home, theres a message on my answering machine (jerk should have called my cell phone to save me another 50 mile drive) and he says "thats physical damage and it's not covered under warranty, it's gonna cost you $90.00 USD". I said "WHOAAA SCREW THAT!!!" I picked up on the Monday cause they were closed on the weekend, I open the thing up, and the solder job they did on that thing was the worst solder job I've ever seen. It amazed me that it lasted as long as it did w/o breaking. there was like, a ball of solder on the lead of the connector, but no good contact w/ the PCB. So I soldered it, put it back together. and it worked for a while. but then I started having weird problems where if I disconnected from the AC adapter and went to battery, the sound wouldn't work, or the computer would completely hang. and then I started having problems w/ the keyboard where keys just started popping off the keyboard as I would type. (I do a lot of typing, so it just can't handle it I guess) and of course Toshiba covered none of this under warranty. So the thing was getting on my nerves enough where I went out and bought an ThinkPad. I absolutely love my ThinkPad T60, I've had it for a few months now. The thing is the best and can take a beating. I know someone who dropped their ThinkPad down a flight of stairs and had not a scratch. It's very light, and I can easily get 5 hours of battery life of constant use. If I try hard enough I can usually get up to 8 hours (or more). (I have the 9 cell battery instead of the 6 cell, and I do NOT have the extra UltraBay Slim Battery) The only complaint I have w/ the T60 is that the 14.1" screen has very poor viewing angle and contrast, and certain odd 3 button key combinations cause keyboard errors (like Space + Up + Left bugs me if I'm playing a driving game). A Thinkpad cost a little more than a Dell or other mainstream computer would cost but I think it's worth the extra cost.
New ThinkPads
Refurbished Thinkpads
but, I learned my lesson trying to save money and buying a Toshiba, you're better off in the long run to spend a little more money and buying the laptop you want then buying a laptop, hating and and having problems with it and then buying another one a year later.
BTW ThinkPads used to be made by IBM, now they are made by a company Called Lenovo, which has always been involved in the manufacturing of ThinkPads, but now they own the whole IBM PC division, but the quality of the product has not gone down, and the computers are still IBM branded.
