800Mhz RAM - Significantly better than 667Mhz RAM?

Since it is recently my 14th B'day, coupled with the good grades that ive been getting at school, my parents have decided to get me a computer.

So... My local PC store has everything that i need. Except RAM clocked at 800Mhz. The best RAM there is a corsair 66Mhz DDR2. Is it really worth spending extra $$$ to get RAM clocked at 800Mhz from newegg?

Does it really increase performance SIGNIFICANTLY?

Imo... no. in game the faster RAM made a difference of about 3 fps or so.

Besides... if you get some nice branded ram,.. im pretty sure you can reach the 800 with some minor overvolting of the RAM ;)

Thanks for your reply, but you only answered in terms of 'games'. What about regular computing, say, firefox with 6 tabs, itunes, utorrent... etc.

And I dont want to overclock/volt anything... I dont think that extra 15% in performance is worth all the risk and the voiding of your warranty. AKA Im too chicken :D

The only reason I see for having DDR2 800 memory is when you overclock a Core 2 Duo processor, and the FSB is really high. Then and only then get DDR2 800, because you can use a better memory divider and actually see a performance increase.

Corsair DDR2 667 shoudl be fine. If it is CL4, you could probably loosen up the timings and run it at 800Mhz, or elsea small (.1v) voltage bump would likely also give it the oomph to run perfectly stable and safely at 800Mhz.

Omega is quick to point this out: If you look at 667 and 800Mhz versions of the same ram from the same manufacturer, often the only difference you will see is either the 667 is C4 while the 800 is C5, or else the 667 will be .1 or .2 volts less in operation. So really, buying 800Mhz DDR2 is almost like buying factory overclocked ram, if you look at it in the right light.

I would have to agree with what jet said. M yRAM was vital for my OC monster... :-D

Seriosuly though, if you have 2 gigs of any ddr2 RAM you won't have a problem running multiple programs or gaming.

You will not see a difference. I have 667mhz ram and I OCed it to 800Mhz and did not notice one difference in gaming and multi-tasking.

My monitor turns black everytime i play games. The monitor and system unit are still on but the screen is all black. I've tried updating my video card driver several times already. I've also installed additional fans on the system unit's casing. My video cards is an ATI Radeon 550XT.

Go to the bios, change voltages or change the timings. I suggest you do some research on your ram to see what timings are stable for the ram, then increase the voltage.

Just up your FSB or increase the memory multiplier from 2.5. You'll more than likely have to give it voltage and/or loosen the timings to get it to run at 800 from 667.

Anyone know the answer?

I just wanna get my 667Mhz RAM to 800Mhz. Thats all

Some motherboards (such as mine), allow you to overclock the RAM seperatly, however you do loose a bit of performance when it's not dynamically synced with the FSB, however it's still a cool feature to have.

Check your BIOS to see if it allows you to do that.

You'll notice a difference when programs are loading things into RAM... For example, if you have a game like WOW that loads a few hundred MB into RAM, you'll see it load in much faster... when the game loads, it doesn't need to access things as fast so you'll see the 3FPS or so change...

If you use something like CAD, that takes RAM dumps and makes a lot read/write requests to it in a short period of time, you'll also notice a difference. If you're just messing around in Windows or any windows app (word, excel, browsers, other small windows apps) don't waste the money.
