Looking to upgrade CPU.

Hi.

I am currently running a Pentium 4 2.66 GHz, and I'm looking to upgrade to an Intel Duo 2.

I realise that I will need to swap around my motherboard.

But what I really need to know is, will the Duo 2 suit my needs?

I will be:

1. Editing un-compressed digital video and audio.
2. Programming and compiling software.
3. Playing modern games everynow and then. (But not taking the graphics to a serious level, so, I'm not hugely bothered)

I really just want something that will drill through these tasks.

I was thinking about the Duo 2 2.13 GHz 2MB cache. Although, would it be worth it going for the 2.4 GHz 4MB cache?

From my understanding, unless you are running 64 bit software, there isn't a lot of point in large system caches.

And speed wise, how will a Duo 2.13 GHz compare to my Pentium 4 2.66 GHz?

Thanks for any advice.
It's appreciated.

Any Core 2 Duo will be suitable for your needs, but personally I would choose the 2.4Ghz E6600. 64Bit will become a standard very quickly, especially with the release of Vista, so I recommend you also take that into consideration.

Compared to your P4, the C2D will be insanely fast, not to mention its a dual-core.

You do say that you play games and edit video, so you may want a mid/high end video card to go along with it.

Oh, so Vista is 64 bit?
