Shut down computer now nothing!

I shutdown my computer the other day and now when I press the button to turn it on I get nothing, no power up at all. I know it's either the motherboard (Asus A8N-SLI Premium socket 939), my power supply (Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W), however my motherboard indicates that there is power getting to the board (the little green light is lit?) or my processor (AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 2.4GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939), I'm not real sure if it would or wouldn't turn on if the processor was bad...where would you start?:confused:
Maybe it's the switch on the case?? (GIGABYTE 3D AURORA GZ-FSCA1-ATB)
 
Look where the front panel jumpers connect to the motherboard. Pull off the one that says switch, and use a paper clip to connect the two pins for the power switch. If it turns on, then the switch is your problem. If not, then it is something else


Do you have a voltmeter?
 
I would start by throwing out the whole thing and buying an Intel... :P

Ok... Failing that. Bobo has the first one right. Short out the pins to eliminate the switch. The next thing to do is to try a new PSU in it. Borrow one from a friend and see if it fires up. After that you can probably safely assume that it's your mobo. I don't really think your CPU will just pop like that.
 
Well the Intel solution is out of the question!
I tried what Bobo suggested and no luck so I can assume it's not the switch, to answer the other question, I do have a volt meter is there a way to check the power supply with it? Everybody always says "borrow one from a friend" there has to be a way to check these things with a volt meter! Thanks for the replies
 
Yep, you can check it with a volt meter.

Is the power supply on? I.e. is the fan spinning?

If not, then unhook the motherboard connector, and use a paperclip to connect the green wire to any black wire. This will turn the power supply on (don't worry, it's not dangerous) Use the voltmeter to measure the voltages from each of the connectors. (I assume you know how to use a voltmeter)

The red wires should be 5v, yellow is 12v, and orange is 3.3v.

If everything there tests fine, then only the motherboard and CPU are left.
 
Did the paper clip thing and the power supply seems to be fine, the case fans were spinning and all the voltages were good. Removed the Mbo and I'm sending it back. I've read many statements of this Asus Mobo failing for NFR so off it's going! When I get it put back together I'll let you know if that was the issue, thanks for the help troubleshooting the PS
 
Well I got a new Mobo and put everything back together and...NOTHING! All I have left seems to be the CPU. I don't know what happens if the CPU dies, will it have the symptom that mine is indicating...No power to anything???
 
the motherboard doesnt give any error codes? (beeping? and assuming you have that speaker connected to the motherboard)
i mean,..isn't there an error code for the CPU? (wich seems kinda unlikely that there isnt) you also checked the 4 pin connector with powers the CPU?

The computer does absolutley nothing, nada, zilch, zip, it acts as if the power button was never pushed, no post, no fans spinning nothing! The motherboard does have a green light lit which tells me it's powered but my main question right now is; if I was to take a working computer shut it down and remove the CPU what will happen if I try to turn on the machine? Will it beep, fans spin, will it do anything or will it do what mine is doing...NOTHING!
 
Well after many RMA's the problem has been solveed, I replaced the motherboard first time around...same thing, then I RMA'd the MB and the PSU and when I put it all together the thing came back to life! I still think it was the MB but only God really knows what was wrong! Bottom line is it's working again and I'm happy, after all is all about my happiness.
