A Moderate Graphics Card... Till Direct X 10

Hi guys, and gals. Im buying a desktop computer and of course, I need a new grphics card. Now I was going to go to Best Buy and buy the best graphics card they have but now I have a dillemma (sry if spelling is wrong). My friend said that when Windows Vista comes out there will be new graphics cards that are Direct X 10. So now I need to get a moderate graphics card that can last me about a year, untill I get Vista.

So I need a graphics card that can handle graphics extensive games (Half -Life 2, FEAR, Battlefield 2), but is cheap and can last me till Vista and Direct X 10.

Price $175 Canadian / $156 American Tops (Maybe A Tad Higher)

Thanks Alot... :D

The 7600GT is a great budget-midrange card.

While Vista and with it DX10 will be releaed next year, nVidia's new DX10 capable G80 GPUs are scheduled for release mid-November this year. If you do decide to wait, it needn't be for too long.

Like my new avatar grey410? :-P

I would agree also, for an extra 20.00 thats a lot more bang for your buck...

I'd pony up the extra $20 and get the 7900GS. It's on newegg for $179 with a $20 mail in rebate which would make it $159. It's better than the 7600GT. Check it here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130056
:P :P :P

your wording is bad it is not a 20 dollar difference because you are including the rebate on yours making it $160 but not on the other card to so if you include its rebate it is now $114 to $160 making it a $44 difference? so hes not just paying $20 more dollars hes paying about $50 for more pixel pipelines a better chip but hes also losing core clock speed and memory clock speed though it may still be worth it if he can shell out the money

Wording?

He said that was his price. 156 (his top price)+ 23 (for the 7900GS) = 179 - 20 (mail in rebate) = 159. Right? I was implying he spend $20ish more than his top amount to get a better card. The reviews on it speak for themselves regardless of pipes, clock, speeds, etc... Which is still just IMHO. So yes I still recommend the 7900GS over any 7600GT.

The 7900GS is worth the bump. More pipes and all. So what if the core is a touch slower? It should easily oc up to speed, but more importantly the ram has twice the bandwidth (256-bit) that the 7600GT has (128-bit). So the bandwidth of the graphics memory subsystem would be the same even if the 7900GS was running at half the speed of the 7600GT (theoretical). Either way, much better. The 256-bit memory path is one of the reasons that the x800/x850 ATI cards are holding on so long - that 256-bit bus along with the fairly powerful core. However, the 7900GS eats both the X850 and the 7600GT for breakfast. :)
