Computer Odds And Ends?

I am a n00b when it comes to building my own computer, is it that difficult?


A couple questions:

1. Do I need to buy any extra things to put my computer together, like cables, thermal paste?

2. Do I need to buy IDE cables? I don't know what these are or what they do, but I heard you need them

3. Do I need to buy Thermal Paste, same as question 2.

I have picked out:

Processor
Motherboard
PSU
Video Card
RAM
Case
Hard Drive
CD/DVD Drive
Operating system

I have monitor/keyboard ect.


Is there anything else I need besides the above things, like some extra fans or cables,

I've seen that but I have no clue about which IDE cables I should buy and how to put them in and where to put them

The guide doesn't explain fully.
 
I am using the hard drive and CD/DVD rom from my old computer, and it has a cable like that connecting them (IDE)

So that means I don't need to buy IDE cables then? I can just take the hard drive and CD/DVD out of my old computer as a unit with the cable attached and stick it in my new computer?

And the thermal paste is only used to put on top of the processor like in the building guide right?

yeah but a really really small amount, amount 1/4 the size of pea
 
So I can just pull out my hard drive, CD/DVD Rom drive and the cables as one unit and put in in my new assembled system?

yeah its just a cable, although in a new rig you may move to SATA drives rather than IDE, which need different cables, but those cables will come with case/drive
 
If you have a SATA harddrive then that will use SATA cables, right now almost all CD/DVD-drives use IDE-cables. There are some SATA CD/DVD-drives but they're not that common yet.
 
Ah crap, I can't extend my budget another hundred dollars for a new harddrive, maybe can someone suggest a different motherboard which has two IDE connectors that is just as good as the Gigabyte 965P DS3

Remember for Core 2 Duo

And 2 GB PC6400 800mhz RAM

That's going to be hard, as most P965 boards only have one IDE connector. How much cheaper is the Gigabyte GA-965P-S3?
 
Were you talking about the Gigabyte GA 945P S3, Do you suggest I go with this one instead and then buy a SATA hard drive?


If I downgrade my motherboard from a Gigabyte 965P DS3 to the Gigabyte 945P S3 will I see a decrease in performance?

No decrease, its just not the "Durable" version (which means almost nothing). Get the S3 and a nice cheap SATA drive.
 
Will the 945P S3 support my RAM I'm planning on getting?

In the motherboard specs it says it supports 667mhz RAM, and I'll be using 800mhz RAM, is this a problem.... as well as when I use the system configurator on that site, when I select the S3 it takes away the option for the RAM I want to use..... Does this mean it's not compatible?
