Sorry if this has been asked before (could not find this discussion in SEARCH).

Does anyone have experience with their laptop (suddenly) powering off during heavy useage? I have an Averatec w/Pentium IV, HT 768mb RAM.

I've troubleshooted an overheating possibility (nope). I've troubleshooted a PW Supply possibility (nope). I've run "Bit Defender" anti-virus software, and found no issue or damge to the HD.

I'm stumpted... :(

Any suggestions?

Regards...

How did you troubleshoot the overheating issue, because I feel nearly 100% sure that's the problem. It's a very common problem with most any laptop today.

Thanks for the reply...

That was my initial suspicion. Checked both fans and even replaced the heatsink grease, but all seems well. Of course this P-IV gets hot, but I can get this thing to replicate the issue right after turn-on (cold) by running multiple programs.

I then began to think that it was my PW Supply (low voltage) but (although not as often) I can get it to replicate on battery, as well.

You have a motherboard problem. My sister had this exact same problem on her Compaq, and I ran through all the same trail and errors. thought about overheating, etc. Finally i took it to my tech at CompUSA ( i work there ) He said motherboard issue. Replace your board (if you want to spend that kind of money) or jsut buy a new computer. sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

Thanks Flash...

I was soooo not wanting to hear that... :o

You may be right.. I guess I'll try re-formatting the thing first, but if that doesn't help...
