Why does everyone hate dell PCs?

this is coming from a dell cutomer who owns over 15 dell towers including two servers that were $10,000 a piece....... Dell just sucks.

Their quality to price ratio is skewed. It costs like $1000 for a 3 ghz machine. That makes my eyes water.

Yo what kind of statement is this?

1st dell doesnt use "crap" parts..ive had many dells, all wdc hard drives..samsung/sony drives and sony batteries...intel and now amd procs...where is crap there?

Also people complain about their price, omg first yes u can build a desktop cheaper for a better computer but its a company, they need to make a profit net of paying salaries for their workers, and paying their fixed costs, its like any business.

Also i dont see how price is complained upon, i got my dell lappy for a final price with tax for 750 usd..and for my specs no hp/compaq/gateway/sony came close, none even had a dual core proc in it, so explain to me how their more expensive?

I never said anything about crappyness or even crapatude. Bt quality I meant power, Im sorry if I wasn't clear on that. Also, I, as a consumer, really don't care about the company's needs to make a lot of money. I just want a computer. Whenever I stumble upon a big company that sells PC's, like Best Buy or Dell, I feel that they are ripping off the general populace.

None taken, I thought it was pretty funny...

you bet! I did like that one :D Dell-lightfull,.. just great =D

Edit: as for the topic... I dont have something against del,... they are just too expensive for me.
My current pc is still under 1k euro's ( wich would have been under $1k if i bought the parts in america if i lived there),.. and i cant immagine getting a pc like this for that price from dell.. :)

I have no particular problem with Dell. The few times that I've had to deal with their tech support, I've gotten what I needed ASAP.

The complaint about proprietary parts is a valid one. However, isn't this what they are all doing in the laptop space anyways. It only makes business sense to try and lock in customers, as many a software vendor does(not naming any names :P )?

Let me ask you then...What brand motherboard did the Dell have?
How much were you able to overclock?
Yea, its a company that needs to make profit, but do you have an obligation to pay them to make that profit? ;)
How much ventilation do you have?

Also, I don't see too many non-Dell customers hating Dell. The only Dell-haters that I personally know are FORMER Dell customers.
Oh yea, what PSU was in the Dell and what are the amps?

Price is not that big a deal since OBVIOUSLY they need to make a profit....its a business, thats what they do.

Most of the quality issues are PSU and motherboard quality, many manufacturers use crippled mobos and second-rate PSUs. Also, the RAM is usually budget RAM with hardly a name on it (some use Corsair or Kingston Value RAM but its still not what I'd consider "quality". of course RAM is RAM if you arent overclocking anyways so no big deal) Also, Dell likes to cram parts into small cases so even if your Dell supports PCI-E gfx cards, theres no telling if one of the high-end cards will even fit. Dell cases are just....no...., theres hardly a vent anywhere except the back on many Dells at my school. We did get newer Dells with front vents but only because the cases were so small on those that there would be serious heat issues if there wasnt a vent.

The parts you listed about "quality" really arent of importance, HDDs are cheap anyways so getting from a better known maker has no impact on price. CD Drives are even cheaper than HDDs so same rule applied. Of course they are going to use AMD and Intel CPUs....name another CPU manufacturer that any PC maker uses....

Edit: damn you liquidshadow, beat me to it!! :P

My family has an old Dimension with a PIII in it. It has had it's problems but it's still running today with the same parts so I'm not complaining. I also have a Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptop that is almost a year old and it HASN'T HAD A SINGLE PROBLEM. So definately no complaints. My laptop is solid with great performance, a really high res screen, and plenty of venting an heat dissapation.

Just a little info for your mind. A 3 ghz machine hardly matters in terms of performance these days or in that case 2 years back. 2 ghz amd machine were beating 3 or 3.5ghz intel machines years upon years until recently.

neighbor bought a dell three months ago-it was all screwed up. he is now on his third dell. i'm impressed.

Well unless it doesn't work at all. Spent over $800 on a new dell pc about 5 months ago and the ram was shot right from the beginning. It would boot every now and then but would randomly restart and freeze in post. Then the Windows XP copy they put on the machine was replicated. After Microsoft started the genuine advantage crap the copy of XP on the dell was telling me that it wasn't a genuine copy and that i needed to contact the distributer. After numerous calls to dell support (about 6 separate calls) nothing was solved. They refused to send me replacement ram and a valid copy of windows XP. i eventually gave up and bought new RAM. Called Microsoft (which i shouldn't have to do since its OEM and dell takes care of it) and they gave me a new code for the copy of XP.

After replacing those two things it worked well. Sold it bc it was a pain in my ass and built my own machine. I tried Dell again with there laptops and haven't had any trouble yet :D

Plus working in the IT department at my work we use dells and i am constantly running around fixing there problems. Most of it being the crappy optiplex gx 240-280 which have a nice little problem with the memory controller which causes the fan to sound like its a plane going to take off

A 2GHz chip beating a 3.5GHz chip? Hehe how long have you been into computer technology again?

The Dell systems has their ups and downs, but they wouldn't be selling the crazy amount of systems they do if they were crap, the fact of the matter is, if they were even half as bad as people here says they are they would be out of business. And about this hate thing, it's called 'jumping on the bandwagon'.

Btw, for all you kids saying "they can't overclock", well, are you serious? What makes you think their bigger customers (the ones that matters) would care about such an activity?

i like dell, some cases though, i have been angered.... i had a customer who wanted to buy a new dell off of me... he calls me more then anyone else with problems...

never had any problems with dells, but i've never owned one... just used other people's to make judgements... i really don't care for any brand-name PCs anymore as i've realized that it's a lot cheaper to build one yourself...

We go over this every time a dell thread arises. Think about it logically. Yes dell sells a lot of pcs right? Well lets take a look at why. They used to have great service and great reliable products. So they got a lot of money from being #1. Now who buys most dell pcs? People who dont know much about computers. Much easier to let dell tell you what you need. So with all the money dell made they put it into advertising!! Thats a thought huh? So its not who has the best product, its called using a lot of advertising to influence the people who dont know much about computers. You think they care about the people who know how to use computers. Not really since they make there money off of people looking for an easy and cheap way to get a pc. (yes i said cheap...bc of course if you just getting a standard system to get you buy and your starting from scratch then dell would be cheaper. Now you can definently build a high end gaming pc much cheaper than the dell ones)

To prove my point on advertising...whats the first thing you think of when you hear HP...printers. Then you get into regular consumers. You see very few adds for lenovo, mac, hp, etc. Whats the advertisement you see the most. That would have to be commercials for Dell.

Like i said above...you think they care about the people like us who use this forum. most money for them is made by big corporations buying in bulk and consumers who dont know much about pcs.

Now i dont hate dells. Ive just had a lot of problems with them. I wouldn't really recommend them to most people unless they wanted a cheap standard machine and they needed monitor, keyboard, etc.

in response to SMWD above, this guy also researches to death his suv purchases, but is always in the shop; bad luck? one thing i have noticed; he has his computers delivered by messenger services, maybe it has to be related to mishandling. anyone think that might it?

Well, personally I've had bad experiences with Dell desktop PC's. Having the harddrive fry on me, having the cpu fan die, but the processor didn't go with it since it was in the cold basement. Um, the cases are pretty bad. Some people like it cause its near silent, but that's only cause the entire computer has like 1 fan. Besides that, I love dell laptops, my uncle has one and its very nice.

But overall, I just don't like prebuilt computers, cause building your own is more fun :)

I don't think Dell computers are necessarily for people who don't know much about computers. Some people know a lot about computers but only needs one for certain reasons not necessarily for the gaming etc. Also building your own com isn't necessarily cheaper either. Ok building your own computer does mean you get higher performance for less than you would pay for a dell or any other brand with the equivalent specs but some people don't need it, and busy people don't have time to build their own one.
