After receiving news that Vista will be released on January 30 (Engadget) to consumers (Nov. 30 to companies) I decided to make my Vista build after Christmas when the prices are lower. I will be using it for light/medium gaming (I have an Xbox 360 for games), 3d modeling in Solidworks, and Photoshop/Gimp image stuff.
What I want most of all is stability. My budget will probably be between 800 (absolute minimum) and 1300 (absolute maximum) USD. This has to include Vista, shipping, and taxes. Please try to stay as close to the middle of those two figures.
Other requirements:
Core 2 Duo. Self explanatory.
Looks smooth and sophisticated, not big and flashy. I won't be carrying this around so weight isn't an issue. The case doesn’t have to be super expensive.
Coolness & Quietness. I have been thoroughly pissed @ my dell for the past few months due to its constant crashing, heat related and not. Try to achieve a balance between the two.
Either a G80 or an R600 GPU. Doesn’t have to be top of the line, just needs to be good for what I mentioned above.
Obviously, a good power supply. >500 watts, and 30A on the 12v rail.
What I most value is stability, efficiency, and upgradeableness (is that a word?)/future proofness.
I already have a sound card, speakers, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I only need the computer.
If the budget can't be met, I have 1 gig of DDR2 RAM, 120 gigs through 2 hard drives, and a CD/DVD drive I can use if absolutely necessary.
Finally, the longer it is future proof the better.
