OCing My Pentium 4 2 ghz

Hey, I am new to overclocking, and I want to overclock my CPU a bit, because it is pretty old and has problems with handling things at a good speed. I do not plan on keeping this computer for a long time, so I was wondering, do I need a cooling device if I am only going to do a small oc boost? Or can I just speed up my fans? Finally, people say that to OC you need to find the BIOS file, how do I find it? Thanks!
 
Yeah, I looked through OC101, but I still do not know if I am able to OC and about the cooling solution, so here are my specs:
Intel Pentium 4 2.00 ghz
766 RAM DDR PC2700
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
Gateway E-4000

I am sorry but you will have very unlikely chances you can overclock you pc. It is a Brand name company and they lock their bios and you can't overclock it. You might get lucky with something like clockgen but...... Sorry.
 
With a PCI card, performance is going to be so bad, a little OCing isn't going to make a difference in most, if not all situations.

edit: I just noticed that's an MX440...I used to have one of those (AGP). What the heck , just OC the crap out of it and see if it makes a difference. If not, then it doesn't matter anyway.

i thought MX440's were PCI? or do they make them in AGP 2?

if it's AGP, then yes, OC it, you may get a good performance increase..
 
I wouldnt OC the MX440... i tried it on my old one,.. and a SMD resistance went.. :( besides,.. the MX440 is a pretty bad overclocker, and gets really, really few extra performance with it
 
Well, what if something goes wrong with the OCing? Will my GPU get destroyed? Also do I need a cooling device? Finally, how do I find the BIOS? Thanks.

well thats a risk your going to have to take. you might need additonal cooling if your card doesnt have a fan like mine or if the fan doesnt have adequate cooling. you dont have to go into your BIOS to o/c your card. download and install Coolbits to unlock the clock frequency settings in your control panel. increase the core and memory clock by 5 increments and test the card for any artifacts.
 
Ok, the core clock frequency is 270 mhz and the memory clock frequency is 333 mhz. What would be a safe OC (even though there is always a risk)? Also, should I open my computer to check for a fan or should I just monitor the temperatures? Thanks.
