Vista optimism... or is it wishful thinking?

I got a good laugh out of this line:

"Jim Allchin, co-president of Microsoft's platforms and services division, said it expects consumers to make a "fast and immediate" switch to the new Windows."

Wake up, Jimbo. Not everyone shares your enthusiasm. Not everyone is going to rush out and buy a new computer. Not everyone is going to be able to use Vista, or even want to do so. Intelligent PC users will wait until you iron out the bugs and issue Vista's first Service Pack.

You sure it's not a joke?

My mrs was talking to 2 mothers at school the other day and they were complaining about their machines, both were running Windows 98 still.

Only people who will have Vista are people buying new machines and Windows fans.

Who is rushing into Vista? I'll slap a new build together and still be running XP... and ? Welll i always have to have something to dual OS with. But Vista? not at $399 a pop for a cd! Besides the Pro and Home editions a few Linux distros may fill the void for a few years still. :D

Where did you guys get your pricing from last i saw the upgrades for VISTA ULTIMATE were only 299? but if you have a msdn subscription its free!! HAHA i get it free through school love it love it!!

Yup. Vista is a good OS (i run RC1 on my home computer) but it isn't worth $400. My next build, Q1 2007, will still run XP.

TOO has a great point. I'd still keep Win2000Pro if I had a P3 and an install of it. 2000 pwns the hell out of XP w/r/t stability and speed on old hardware.

I don't plan to upgrade to Vista until it's basically required!

Currently everything in the software world now is seen as 2K/XP required. You can expect in 2008 you will start to see XP/Vista on everything coming out for a few years from that point on. So you know XP is going to be around for awhile. Can't help to like that one bit. :D
