takes forever to boot

hi guys, a mate asked me to post on the forum for him...

Hey,

I've been having a problem with my computer lately. What happens is it takes ages to boot, as in 5-6 minutes. I've tried formatting it, and it runs fine, until I install Windows XP SP1. After I install it, it starts with the problem again. What could be wrong?

I'm running a PD 3.4GHz, Gigabyte GA-8I945PL-G Motherboard, running all the included Gigabyte drivers, some generic DDR2 667MHz DIMM RAM, WD 250GB, if it makes any difference.

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

cheers guys!

norton has been known to slow down more systems than it protects, lol. i would use something alittle lighter on the processes.

could it just be any software that he's installing that takes ages to start up when windows starts?

After you install go to start run and type msconfig.exe and remove anything from the startup that you dont want or need to start automatically that can substantially increase your speed

I've never heard of setting up msconfig.exe how would i go about setting that up to increase speed?

When you go to run and type in msconfig.exe it brings up a menu click on the startup tab and then go in there and remove anything you dont want to start the things like norton if u have it and like video things leave but just take a couple of screenshots of whats in there and we can help you with what to remove and what to leave

Hey guys, this was originally my question, thanks to my mate for posting it for me, and thanks for the replies.

what about viruses? do you have Norton antivirus?

I'm pretty sure its not a virus, as this happens when I've formatted and reinstalled windows, and I run Trend Micro PC-cillin 2007, not Norton.

I've tried formatting, and then just installing SP1, this still happens (the slow booting), so I don't think its a specific program problem.

Why are you not just installing SP2 instead of SP1

If I install SP2 only, does this fix everything, meaning I don't have to install SP1?

Not saying it will fix it, but yes if you install SP2 you dont have to install SP1, does it still boot slow right after you install the OS, before you install anything else

Nope, it only does it after I've installed SP1. The thing is, to install some of my Gigabyte drivers, it says it requires SP1 to be installed.

I think I'll try reformatting, and I'll just install SP2, see if its possible to install the drivers.
