One or two? Three or four? Five or Six?

One is fine. In my theory, the extra PCI slots are worth it :) Crossfire and SLi isn't amazingly good, anyway.

I am not dual weilding video cards

He doesn't have a dual card setup, so he doesn't need a SLI/Crossfire motherboard.
Also, my personal view is that the extra PCI-e slot going to the video card is not convenient, because it takes out another PCI slot, which I use a good bit of.

While SLi might be good once you get into the $175-$250 range, for cheaper setups it is pointless, for example, running two 7300GTs in SLi.

true.. but SLI is only worth it with higher end cards.. but its still worth it imo ^^

Well if you have a higher-end card.....why do you need 2? High-end cards can run anything anyways.... It would be cheaper to buy one high-end card and save the money for a new high end card later when new ones come out. I will only think it will ever be even remotely worth the price you pay if they can make both graphics card run at full speed so you get double the performance....

So I would recommend having 1 PCI-E x16 slot. PCI slots are really useful for a myriad of components and until PCI-E x1 replaces PCI, you should keep as many PCI slots as you can. (I think I use all of mine but 1 and that will be used when i get my sound card)
