So i built my own computer with everything new except harddrives. and my new motherboard only has one IDE port. I had two hard drives, one is 40gb, which originally has the WIndows XP installed, and my other storare device is the 120gb hard drive. That's not a problem though because i only want the 120gb in the new computer. I wanted to install the 120gb into my new computer, since i can only use one drive. But everytime i put the 120gb drive in, the computer says failure boot disk error, insert system disk....

But when i install my 40gb instead of the 120gb, it works fine...... so my question is how do i make the 120gb work in my new computer.... do i have to reformat the hard drive? if so, how do i go about doing this? do i need to place it back in my old computer along wit the 40gb and reformat the 120gb, then take it out and place it in the new computer. Then can i install windows XP on that hard drive.....????

BTW, i don't have a floppy drive in neither computers.....

You can reformat that drive while it's in your new computer if you insert your system disk (a copy of windows) and just reformat and reinstall windows onto the 120gb. You'll lose all the information on that drive though so if you want anything on that drive back it up.

yeah, i don't mind losing everything i have on the hard drive. The problem is that it will say failure boot disk error, insert system disk and press any key..... So if i put in my windows XP cd, it should read it and i could press any key?

Put the 120GB HDD in and then turn on PC, Go into the BIOS and set the CD drive as 1st boot priority, Save the BIOS and then insert the windows disc. restart the PC and fingers crossed you will install some setting and then be able to make a partition on the drive. Then go though the process of installing windows :)

whats this supposed to mean? what setting are you talking about?\

thanks for the help

before you are allowed to partiton the drive the CD will install some temp setup files. This is normal!

thanks....... i will try that today and keep you updated...

i appreciate you taking the time to help me....

you changed the jumper on the 120 when you installed it, right? it was set up as a slave in the old system, but the jumper has to be changed to sinle now that it's the only one you're gonna use in the new system.

yeah, i took out the jumper.....

how should i set the priority sequence for booting in my BIOS.....?

everytime i run my computer, it keeps giving me that error message. I go back into the BIOS and do absolutely no changes, load up the system again and it works again.... I think it's something with the BIOS that needs to be messed up because in the beginning i just messed with anything in the BIOS
