2Gb DDR2 SDRAM...

yes. ive got 2 512's in at the moment its the ram that i got with it. so can i use any DDR2 if my motherboard supports it?

no. Theres speeds associated with the memory. If ur not sure about ur motherboard or ram u need, i suggest going to crucial.com. Then click the scan my system icon. Itll come back telling u what ram u need as well as the type of motherboard and what its compatible with as well as almost anything u want to know about the parts of ur computer. After that u can either buy the new ram from them or take the info and buy it somewhere else.

yeah i checked my bios and it told me what Ram i have but i forgot to check my motherbaord and also i am going to check out crucial.com

thanks!

Both, actually. Getting 800Mhz ram on a 533Mhz computer would be a waste of money on more expensive ram that you couldn't use the speed of. Now, if you were to sell it down the road, the 800Mhz would command more money later - though fyi the next top of the line chipset (680i from nVidia) supports 1200Mhz memory, so you're already falling behind with that, in a way. The 800Mhz would also be better in case you upgrade your computer later on.

Now, do you really need 2GB? Sure, its nice, but look at your other components. A 2.8Ghz P4. Is it hyperthreading? My 3.2Ghz P4 600-series doesn't necessarily need that much ram, especially with my 5900XT graphics card. 1GB (which is coming) is sufficient. Also, your graphics card. x700 graphics are not top end, and are not going to be pushing maximum framerates, anyways.

You can upgrade the ram, and yes its going to make it a bit perkier. However, really your cpu and graphics card are aging and will show their bottleneck even more when you do. Perhaps it may be time to start considering a new build? 2GB of ram would go great if you were building a dual core computer with a 7600GT or something, you know?

Just my opinion, others will see things differently - I'm all about the balance. If you want to go with 2GB's, find the best deal you can find on 2GB of DDR2 533 or 667Mhz ram.

Hey man thanks for that. its prompted me to start and build my own computer. and in reaslising this then i can do what i want and have the PC that i want. thanks! :D

Well it depends on what he wants to do with the computer. I do agree that the CPU is falling behind, but for something who doesn't game, the x700 is more than enough.

IMO, I would stick with 1gig of ram, save up some money, then build a new computer all together.

yeah im going to stick with the 1gb in the machine that i have but i will upgrade to 2gb or even 3 or 4. i do a lot of video editing and know that i need a lot of ram. for example i had a 41 hour render on a clip that i had made in AE and i rendered the same clip on a friends comp with the same spec apart from the fact that he has 2gb and it took half the time.

im looking forward to building a new computer altoegther but im a bit unsure of where to start. in reality its going to take me a good months to save up for it so is there anywhere i could start?

2 DDR2 PC4300/5300 modules from Corsair would be enough for you. They have a good stability and overclocking potential.
