can anyone help me , Im trying to install windows 98se on a Dell computer ( it was given to me ) but when I try the message , cannot create a temporary directory. if you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive you will need to create an ms-dos boot partition to set up windows, comes up , what do I do from here? any help would be greatly appreciated

Well, I hope you have nothing on your hard drive because It will need to be formatted. What that means is that it will erase every thing on there and then you will need to load it on but you will need a licence that was never used. You can't use the same one twice. There is no way that I know how to put 2 different OS on the same computer (although it is possible) I don't know unless its one of those MAC that can use a MAC OS and a windows OS. Why 98se?

Hi
I was going to use 98 cause I had the disk , should i buy a new xp ? will i have the same problem , there is nothing on the hard drive at all.

You will have a very low chance of that message coming up if you install XP. And I would get XP Pro instead of XP Home if you get it.

You can use 98se but there no more updates for it! It probably has NTFS parition. Use a 98 boot disk, delete the partition, make a FAT32 parition and format then install 98

OS problem

Hi
thanks for the information. In regards to the os , I have seen on Ebay windows xp pro for sale for Dell p.c.'s sold without a product key . the unit I have has a key on it would this be a cheeper alternative to buying a new copy? and would it work?

When you boot to the floppy type in FDISK for the partition and FORMAT C: to format or what ever drive letter your using.

windows 98 uses fat32 so you would have to format in fat32 i would get a proper version of windows xp home oem ,dont dell pcs come with a restore partition if so i dont think the key you have will not work with a second hand xp disk
