Unknown Problem

I was recently working on a desktop PC trying to get its internet working which I did. The person then asked me to install their anti-virus. I installed the latest and greatest Mcafee suite. The install went fine but after I ran all the updates and tried to go into Mcafee console to run a scann the window is blank. I tried uninstalling IE, Nothing. I tried uninstalling Mcafee and the same thing happened again. Later the owner called and said although she can get onto the internet see can't see emails.

Any ideas where to begin?

The first mistake was removing IE instead of simple getting rid of McAFee. That removed the ISP assigned as well as personal user name and password information needed for opening email accounts while online. That information will now have to be re-entered in order for that person to access accounts. With the ISP situation corrected the user will have to provide the rest.

A couple of things. It depends what you mean by "can't see emails". Antivirus programs can screw up and block any new emails from coming in. I've had to fix those kinds of problems before.

Second, tell your friend that McAffee is a complete pile of crap and a waste of time. Have her grab Avast! instead. It offers protection on a half dozen different fronts or so, unlike the other freebies, and the updates are very regular and free for life as long as you register.

Antivirus with personal firewalls added can raise more havoc. If you want to get bumped offline constantly requiring a system restart each time to get back on try PC-cillin by Trend Micro. That will clean off anything while removing your ISP information as well. Grisoft's AVG 7.5 free edition and Avira's AntiVir also get updates. I wouldn't give any one of them a 100% bill of health however. The only thing that anyone can readily agree on is the expression: "GOOD RIDDENCE! MCAFEE".

the problem is its not my machine and I can't just get rid of the software they just bought. My problem is I need to make it work.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

At first you could try using the msconfig utility to temporarily disable McAFee rather then remove it. That will keep it at bay until you can finish reconfiguring the IE connection. Once you have the system back online you can tweak the email filtering environment a little to get that to work without knocking out IE again. Try assigning a wav file to incoming mail in OE If you hear that then you know incoming mail is being filtered into separate folders like spam or unsure.

Otherwise you haven't configured the mail account properly there. It depends on what mail account you are talking about as well. When you mentioned your friend "can't see emails" that can usually assumed as incoming for Outlook Express while people still go online to access email accounts there too. Besides the user name and password you also have to configure the account properties correctly like "my server requires authentication" and such.

They use Hotmail.

For Hotmail that would strictly be the user name and password along with the option to "remember user name and password settings on this machine" option once logging in. That information becomes a "cookie" or saved text file stored on the hard drive itself. The user name and password are also case sensitive with lower case letters used only. If you are attempting to log in with any upper case forget it. You will get failure to log in messages automatically.

Hotmail can be flaky to log into at times as well. In your spot I would recommend another free email provider like "nospammail.net". Gmail is another consideration as well as inbox.com or something other then the "Hotmail frights" since you haven't been able to log in with the information provided. Even with the security settings at the highest Hotmail is still MS there.
