Im having trouble with my friends computer, he has a ASROCK mobo AM2 with DDR2 667mhz ram (2x 512mb), ATi X850XT, AM2 3800+ X2

Everything runs fine etc... But when he pays BF2 or BF 2142 it will run ok for a hour or so then crash :(

He has the latest drivers from the ATi site. Would it be worth trying to underclock the GPU ?

If so how would i go about doing this ??

Cheers people, Steve

Yes does sound like a heat issue.

Umm Probably not, underclocking wont change much.

Perhaps its more then a video card heat issue, could be CPU etc. Do you mean the computer crashes or the game?

If its the computer when the computer crashes take a look in BIOS and check temps

Don't know about temps of the top of my head but i just found out the PSU is quite old and its a 350W :/

The PC crashes and have to use the case power button to turn it off.

I know exactly the problem.

There is a known problem in the x850XT PE BIOS, where the fan doesnt speed up when it gets hotter. Mine for instance stayed at 14% speed, and would get into the higher 70's and then soon crash. There are many other people here who have the same problems.

The solution? Download and install ATI Tool, and have it run at a higher speed, or set the fan control settings. I just had mine run at 100% all the time, and that fixed all the issues.

Isn't that rather loud :)

I just have mine set to ramp up so by the time it gets to 80C, it is at 100%, and it very rarely gets there...

Yes the x850 has a fairly loud fan, but it wasnt as loud as my case fans at the time, so I didnt care. And 80C is extremely hot, I wouldnt want my x1900 to get above 60-65C. My video card doesnt get higher then 60C.

X1900s are some of the hottest cards...they usually run in the 80s and 90s, but mine doesn't go higher than 63C on the core.

Yuep, that's correct. I had a x850xt as well and it never kicked on the fan until 97C ! Just turn it from 14% to 25%, and have the fan goto %35 at 60C, and 100% at 75C using ati tool.

Do you have any other entries on the list between 35% and 100%? You don't really want it to get to 75C if you can help it.

Result :D:D:D

He used ATi tool and increased the fan speed on his card. We played BF 2142 for hours last night :P

Cheers people for your help, Nice one!
