Faster cpu and mobo, or slower cpu, mobo, 2GB DDR?

i got 2 choices. i can get an amd x2 4200, a nice asus motherboard (98 bucks) and 1 gb xms2 ddr2 800 corsiar., or get an amd x2 3800, a cheap msi motherboard 69 bucks, and 2gb xms2 ddr2 800 corsair. what would be better in games/

If it was "me"? although I run 2gb of Kinston memory here the 4200+ X2 on an Asus board would rule over the MSI model with the 3800+ X2. But that also would depend on the model Asus board not mentioned. If it has a VIA or SIS chipset instead of an nForce I would take the 4200+ and install it on the MSI board if that was the one with the nForce chipset.
(No VIA crap here thank you! :P )

*Gasp* PC Eye, I can't believe you just said that....?! Recommending an MSI board....?!

When originally planning a 2007 build to replace the unexpected "demise" of the old case prematurely I had pondered on going for an alternative to Asus having looked over specifications on Abit, DFI, Gigabyte, and MSI boards for which one offered the best model to compete with Asus as well as being as updated. MSI won out over the rest! Abit while being a good stable brand was also just a little "too far behind" with DFI also slipping there as well. Gigabyte did offer one tail kicking micro-atx board before the AM2 models arrived. With Asus seeing a large number of bad boards lately that still may have to be the option to look at here. :D

as a concept I believe that the Mobo is the most important part you should care about
when I build a PC I'd rather get a better Mobo and a fast CPU than getting cheap ones and a lot of RAM

oops, my bad..... I was thinking ECS.....

ECS = mucho crappo

You better believe it! :P El garrrr bag itch! The specs on those are... :eek: !

Right on the button there! Shady If you have a crud board you end up with a worthless build. You can always add memory later. The 4200+ is also one referred to in the stickys on building a pc especially for gaming. It's not only a slightly faster model but much better if you plan to oc. Also 2gb of the wrong memory won't help much. If you are not ocing Corsair even Kingston value ram will surprisingly perform well on Asus boards. :)

3800 AMD 3GB RAM!!! woooooooooooooot!

Another one that misses the point. With the better board + cpu you can always add more memory later to improve system performance. But no one except a graphics designer or engineer needs more then 2gb at this point. For equal amounts on a dual channel board two 1gb matched dimms works well. But lots of memory with a lower model cpu on a "crap" board wouldn't work here! :rolleyes:
